The Stop

The late-summer sun hung over the grocery-store parking lot like a sheet of fire.

Maya Williams stepped out of the store carrying two small bags. Inside were prenatal vitamins, a carton of ice cream, and a few things she had promised herself she would buy before going home.

At seven months pregnant, even a short grocery trip could leave her exhausted.

She smiled as she looked down at her stomach.

“Your father is going to blame me for the ice cream,” she whispered.

The baby kicked.

Maya laughed softly.

Then the sound of a siren cut through the afternoon.

A police cruiser pulled sharply beside her Honda Accord.

Maya's smile disappeared.

The driver's door opened.

Officer Jeremy Wallace stepped out.

His right hand hovered near his weapon.

“Step away from the vehicle.”

Maya froze.

She looked around, wondering whether he was speaking to someone else.

“Officer?”

“Step away. Now.”

“I—I haven't done anything.”

Wallace's expression did not change.

“This vehicle matches a stolen-car report.”

Maya stared at him.

“My car?”

“Step away from it.”

“But I have the registration. It's in the glove compartment.”

“I said step away.”

Maya slowly raised her hands.

Her heart was pounding.

The baby kicked again.

“Officer, please. I'm seven months pregnant.”

Wallace grabbed her arm.

Before Maya could understand what was happening, he spun her around and forced her against the hood of the car.

The impact knocked the breath from her lungs.

Her shopping bag fell.

The carton of ice cream burst open on the pavement.

“Hands behind your back.”

“Please!”

Maya struggled to breathe.

“The baby…”

The handcuffs snapped shut.

They were painfully tight around her swollen wrists.

People in the parking lot began staring.

Someone pulled out a phone.

Another person started recording.

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“My husband,” she whispered. “My husband works for this department.”

Wallace gave a cold laugh.

“Sure he does.”

Three words.

Three words that would follow him for the rest of his life.

Because neither Jeremy Wallace nor Maya Williams knew that someone in the crowd had already pressed Post.
