He paused.
“Every person we encounter is human first.”
Jeremy shifted uncomfortably.
Daniel began walking through the formation.
He shook hands with every officer.
When he reached Jeremy, he stopped.
“Officer Wallace.”
Jeremy extended his hand.
“Chief.”
Their hands met.
Daniel's grip was firm.
“I look forward to our conversation.”
Then he walked away.
Jeremy watched him.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
The Photograph
That afternoon, Daniel sat alone in his office.
Three photographs rested on his desk.
One was an ultrasound.
One was his wedding photograph.
The third was a still frame from the viral video.
Maya's face.
Tears running down her cheeks.
Daniel stared at it.
His phone rang.
“Maya?”
He listened.
She didn't need to explain.
He already knew.
“I will handle it.”
He ended the call.
Then he picked up his desk phone.
“Captain Morris.”
“Yes, Chief?”
“Send Officer Wallace to my office tomorrow at two.”
A pause.
“And close the door behind him.”
The Meeting
At exactly two o'clock, Jeremy knocked.
“Come in.”
He entered with the confidence of a man who believed he had survived worse.
Daniel pointed toward a chair.
“Sit.”
Jeremy sat.
Daniel studied him.
“Tell me about your career.”
“Twelve years, sir. Multiple commendations. Officer of the Month six times. Clean record.”
“Clean?”
Jeremy hesitated.
“I mean… until recently.”
Daniel nodded.
“The grocery-store incident.”
“Misunderstanding.”
“Misunderstanding?”
“Wrong plate number. Honest mistake.”
Daniel reached toward the desk.
He turned one of the framed photographs around.
The ultrasound.
“Beautiful, isn't it?”
Jeremy glanced at it.
“Yes, sir.”
Daniel turned the second photograph.
The wedding picture.
Jeremy stopped breathing.
He recognized Maya immediately.
“That’s…”
“My wife.”
Silence filled the room.
Daniel's voice was quiet.
“Maya Williams. Seven months pregnant. Arrested three days ago.”
Jeremy's face drained of color.
“Chief, I didn't know.”
Daniel picked up a tablet.
“You didn't know who she was.”
He pressed play.
The video filled the room.
Jeremy heard his own voice.
