Over the past three years, Jennings Properties had suffered catastrophic losses from botched land deals and hidden offshore gambling debts accumulated by David. But David and his formidable, cold-hearted mother, Eleanor Jennings, had a contingency plan. They didn't plan on filing for bankruptcy. They planned on using Laura.
When Laura’s father—a distinguished federal prosecutor named Thomas Mercer—passed away six months earlier, he left his entire twelve-million-dollar private estate in a blind trust reserved exclusively for Laura. The trust, however, contained a specific legal clause written by her late father’s estate attorneys: In the event that the primary beneficiary is rendered legally incapacitated due to severe mental incompetence or psychological impairment, full power of attorney and management of the trust assets shall transfer immediately to her legal spouse.
Eleanor Jennings had spotted the clause immediately.
For months, Eleanor and David had been executing a slow, malicious campaign of gaslighting. Unmarked pill bottles appeared in Laura’s nightstand. Fake medical bills with her name were left on the kitchen counter. Eleanor routinely made subtle, pitying remarks to their wealthy social circle about "Laura’s tragic cognitive decline since her father’s death." They were laying the groundwork to have her legally declared unfit, committed to a private facility, and stripped of her inheritance.
What Eleanor and David failed to realize was that Laura hadn't spent twenty years investigating corporate syndicates just to miss the red flags in her own living room.
Laura had noticed the tampered browser histories, the strange prescriptions filled under her name at a drive-thru pharmacy two towns over, and the subtle shifts in her husband’s phone habits. She had played the part of the confused, grieving wife flawlessly, allowing them to believe their trap was tightening—all while secretly gathering paper trails, bank statements, and recorded conversations.
Today was supposed to be her first afternoon of rest in months before the legal hammer dropped on Monday morning. But David and Eleanor had panicked. Realizing Laura was out of the house and unreachable, they had launched a desperate, scorched-earth hail mary: a fraudulent 911 distress call to have her seized by law enforcement in a public place, creating an undisputed public record of her "psychotic breakdown."
"I... I still need to see your driver's license, ma'am," Officer Miller stammered, trying desperately to regain control of the situation as the crowd watched his every move.
"Of course," Laura said smoothly, reaching into her canvas bag. "My ID is right here. But before you call this into your supervisor, Marcus, look toward the boardwalk."
Officer Miller instinctively turned his head toward the elevated wooden walkway framing the beach.
Standing near the beach showers was a tall, sleek woman with ice-blonde hair, wearing a white designer jumpsuit and oversized Chanel sunglasses. She was holding an iPhone up, carefully filming Miller and Laura.
"That's Victoria Vance," Laura said, her voice dripping with calm detachment. "My husband's chief corporate counsel. And, as of four months ago, his mistress. She’s standing there waiting for you to put me in cuffs so she can upload the video to a probate judge by five o'clock."
Officer Miller’s face flushed red. He looked back at Laura, then over his shoulder at the blonde woman on the boardwalk, who suddenly lowered her phone, looking visibly startled that she had been singled out.
"Ma'am, hand over your identification," Miller said, his tone growing defensive as he pulled his radio unit off his shoulder. "I'm running your name through the system right now."
Laura pulled her leather wallet out of her bag and handed him her driver’s license. Miller took it, his fingers slightly trembling, and typed the driver's license number into his handheld police terminal.
For three long seconds, the terminal buzzed quietly. Then, a sharp, high-pitched double beep echoed from the device. A bright crimson banner flashed across the small screen: CRIME INFORMATION CENTER ALERT — SUBJECT WANTED FOR FELONY GRAND LARCENY AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT. ARMED AND DANGEROUS. HOLD FOR COUNTY SHERIFF.
Miller’s eyes widened in shock. The color drained from his face, replaced by immediate tactical urgency. He dropped the wallet, grabbed his tasers, and pointed it directly at Laura’s chest.
