The interrogation room felt like it was spinning. Laura’s hand reached out, gripping the edge of the steel table to steady herself.

She wasn't Thomas Mercer's biological daughter. She wasn't just David's wife. She was the rightful, sole owner of the fifty-million-dollar Jennings real estate empire—the very empire Eleanor and David had been treating as their personal piggy bank for three decades.

David stared at his mother, his face contorting into an expression of sheer horror and utter betrayal. "Mother... what did you do?"

"You are not Eleanor’s biological son either, David," Agent Vance added coldly, reading from the document. "You were adopted from a private agency in Georgia six months after Catherine died—brought in solely to replace the heir Eleanor lost, so she could maintain administrative control of the Jennings family board."

The silence in the precinct interrogation room was absolute. It was a silence so dense it felt physical, pressing down on everyone present until no one dared to breathe.

David stood frozen, his arms hanging limp at his sides, looking at Eleanor as if he were staring at a complete stranger. Everything he believed about his life—his name, his wealth, his legacy, his pride—had been erased in a single sentence.

"You... you lied to me my entire life," David whispered, his voice cracking, tears streaming down his cheeks, wiping away the fake tears he had put on earlier. "You made me think Laura was ruining our family! You told me she was going to take everything away from us!"

"Shut up, you pathetic little coward!" Eleanor snarled, jumping out of her chair with a fury that startled even Lieutenant Rodriguez. Her eyes were bloodshot, her face twisted with bitter, unadulterated hatred. "You were nothing! I rescued you from a dirt-floor orphanage in Atlanta! I gave you a name! I gave you custom suits, luxury cars, and a place in high society!"

She turned her venomous glare toward Laura, stepping right up to the edge of the table.

"And you!" Eleanor spat, her voice raspy with venom. "You look just like your miserable mother! Catherine thought she was so special, so righteous, leaving everything to a screeching infant! I built Jennings Properties into a multi-million-dollar enterprise! I did the work! I made the deals! Why should a bastard child get everything while I live on a manager's salary?"

"Is that why you killed my father?" Laura asked, her voice remarkably steady, though tears burned behind her eyes. "Because he finally decided to tell me the truth?"

"Thomas Mercer was a hypocritical thief!" Eleanor yelled, completely losing her sanity as she confessed in front of four law enforcement officers and a running body camera. "He kept that file hidden in his safe for thirty years! He threatened to go to the federal prosecutor six months ago! He was going to strip me of my home, my status, my life! I gave him three drops of thallium in his evening brandy every night for a month. He died thinking his heart gave out... and he deserved it!"

David collapsed back against the wall, clutching his head in his hands, weeping hysterically as the reality of his mother's horror sank in.

Officer Marcus Miller stepped forward, his face pale with disgust. He pulled his heavy steel cuffs from his belt, walking straight up to Eleanor Jennings.

"Eleanor Jennings," Officer Miller said, his voice firm and unwavering. "You are under arrest for first-degree capital murder, financial fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement."

As Officer Miller clicked the handcuffs onto Eleanor’s wrists, she didn't struggle. She didn't weep. She simply glared at Laura with pure, burning hatred as she was led toward the door.

"You think you won, Laura?" Eleanor hissed as she passed her. "You have nothing! Your father is dead! Your marriage was a lie! You are entirely alone!"

"I am not alone, Eleanor," Laura said quietly, looking her straight in the eyes. "I am finally free of you."

David dropped to his knees on the cold tile floor, reaching out toward Laura’s shoes as the federal agents moved in to secure him.

"Laura... please!" David begged, his voice broken, dripping with desperate, pitiful remorse. "Please, sweetheart! I didn't know about my aunt! I didn't know she poisoned your father! My mother manipulated me! She controlled everything! You know I loved you... please tell them to stop!"
