Derek grinned.
"You even know how to grapple?"
Cole raised his hands.
That was his answer.
The instructor froze.
Nobody started the timer.
Derek looked toward the wall.
"Put five minutes on."
Someone obeyed.
The timer beeped.
Derek attacked immediately.
He shot forward for a collar tie, intending to snap Cole's head down and establish control.
Cole didn't retreat.
He stepped forward.
For a fraction of a second, the two bodies collided.
Then Derek's feet left the floor.
The movement was so clean that several students didn't understand what they had seen.
Derek was suddenly airborne.
He crashed onto his back.
The mat shook.
Before he could recover, Cole was already on top.
Side control.
Heavy.
Balanced.
Precise.
Derek tried to bridge.
Nothing.
He planted both feet.
Exploded upward.
Cole shifted with him.
Derek tried again.
Cole followed.
There was no visible strain.
That was what frightened people.
Derek was working.
Cole wasn't.
Derek pushed against Cole's neck.
Cole removed the frame.
He trapped Derek's arm.
Derek tried to turn.
Cole followed.
Thirty seconds passed.
Derek's breathing became heavy.
"Get off!"
Cole didn't answer.
He wasn't angry.
That almost made it worse.
Derek had spent years teaching people that dominance was a physical sensation.
Now he was experiencing the opposite.
He was trapped.
His movements were shrinking.
Every escape attempt created another problem.
Derek extended his right arm.
Cole caught it.
The transition was immediate.
Arm lock.
Derek froze.
He knew the position.
He knew exactly what was happening.
He also knew that the man controlling him could break the joint if he wanted.
Cole stopped just before that point.
Derek stared.
His confidence vanished.
"Tap."
Cole didn't say it as a threat.
He simply waited.
Derek slapped the mat.
Tap.
Cole didn't release.
Derek slapped again.
"Tap!"
Still nothing.
His voice cracked.
"I tap!"
One more second passed.
Then Cole released.
Derek pulled his arm against his chest and rolled away.
Cole stood.
He wasn't breathing hard.
The room remained silent.
Derek's face was red.
Cole looked down at him.
"In a real fight," he said quietly, "nobody stops."
Derek looked up.
The sentence had been his.
Now it belonged to someone else.
The Owner Appears
The back-office door opened.
Greg Mercer stepped onto the mats.
He was forty-eight.
Fourth-degree black belt.
Former national champion.
Owner of Apex Grappling.
He had spent twenty years building his reputation.
His students respected him.
His competitors knew him.
His walls were filled with trophies.
Greg looked at Derek.
Then Sarah.
Then Cole.
He immediately understood that something had gone badly wrong.
"What happened?"
Nobody answered.
Greg looked at Sarah.
Her throat was red.
That told him enough.
He looked at Derek.
Derek avoided his eyes.
Greg knew Derek's habits.
He had known for years.
But knowledge and action were different things.
Derek paid his membership.
Derek bought merchandise.
Derek brought people into the academy.
And Greg had convinced himself that Derek's behavior was simply part of hard training.
Now the consequences were standing in the middle of his gym.
Greg pointed at Cole.
"Who are you?"
"Cole Morgan."
"You a member?"
"No."
"Then get off my mat."
Cole looked toward Sarah.
Then back at Greg.
"Your student choked my sister unconscious."
Greg's jaw tightened.
"It was a training accident."
"No."
Greg's eyes narrowed.
"Excuse me?"
"It wasn't an accident."
Cole's voice remained steady.
"She tapped. Derek ignored it."
Greg crossed his arms.
"Combat sports are dangerous."
"Yes."
"People get hurt."
"Yes."
"Then you understand."
Cole shook his head.
"I understand that people can get hurt accidentally. I also understand the difference between an accident and a choice."
Several students lowered their eyes.
Greg felt the room slipping away from him.
He couldn't allow that.
"This is my academy."
Cole looked around.
"Then you're responsible for what happens here."
Greg stepped closer.
"You don't get to come into my academy, assault one of my students, and lecture me about responsibility."
Cole's eyes moved to Derek.
"I stopped when he tapped."
The room went completely still.
Greg understood the implication.
Derek didn't.
Or didn't want to.
He pointed at Cole.
"You got lucky."
Cole said nothing.
Greg stepped forward.
"Enough."
His voice carried authority again.
"This ends now."
Cole nodded.
"Good."
He turned toward Sarah.
"Grab your bag."
Sarah reached for it.
Greg called after them.
"You think you can just walk out?"
Cole stopped.
He looked over his shoulder.
