"Yes."
Greg's face darkened.
"Not before we settle this."
Sarah's eyes widened.
"Cole."
Greg untied his belt.
It landed on the mat.
"I've spent twenty years learning how to fight."
Cole turned fully.
"Then you know what you're asking."
Greg removed his gi jacket.
"Five minutes."
Cole remained perfectly still.
Greg raised his hands.
"Unless you're afraid."
Cole finally smiled.
It was the first time Sarah had seen emotion on his face.
Not anger.
Not amusement.
Recognition.
He understood exactly what Greg was doing.
He was giving Cole one final opportunity to walk away.
Cole looked at Sarah.
She shook her head.
"Don't."
Cole turned back to Greg.
"Put five minutes on the clock."
Five Minutes
The timer beeped.
Greg attacked.
He shot for a double leg with everything he had.
His shoulder struck Cole's midsection.
The two men crashed down.
For the first time that evening, Greg felt relief.
He was on top.
His hands found Cole's ribs.
He began working toward guard control.
Then he realized something.
Cole had deliberately allowed the takedown.
Greg's confidence disappeared.
Cole's legs closed around him.
Closed guard.
Greg tried to posture.
Cole controlled his head.
Greg pushed against the hips.
Cole adjusted.
The position tightened.
"Open your guard."
Cole didn't answer.
Greg tried to stand.
Cole broke his posture.
The room watched.
The difference between them became obvious.
Greg knew sport.
Cole knew control.
They overlapped.
But they were not the same.
Greg threw a forearm across Cole's face.
It wasn't clean.
It was desperate.
Cole didn't react emotionally.
He simply used the opening.
His hips moved.
Greg's balance disappeared.
Cole swept him.
Greg hit the mat.
Cole followed immediately.
Side control.
Greg knew every escape.
He had taught most of them.
He tried the elbow escape.
Blocked.
Bridge.
Countered.
Turn away.
Blocked.
Greg's breathing became heavier.
Cole's did not.
One minute passed.
Then ninety seconds.
Greg began to panic.
He pushed against Cole's shoulder.
Cole removed his frame.
He settled his weight.
Greg tried again.
Nothing.
He couldn't create space.
The gym seemed strangely quiet.
Cole leaned close.
"You watched."
Greg's eyes widened.
"What?"
"You were in your office."
Cole shifted.
"You saw what Derek was doing."
Greg's breathing became ragged.
"You knew."
Cole's pressure increased slightly.
"You chose not to intervene."
Greg's hands pushed harder.
"I didn't know he'd hold it."
"You knew enough."
Greg tried to move.
Nothing.
His lungs burned.
The clock continued.
One minute and forty seconds.
Greg suddenly understood what Derek had felt.
Helplessness.
Not pain.
Not injury.
Helplessness.
He couldn't force Cole to release him.
He couldn't overpower him.
His belt meant nothing.
His trophies meant nothing.
His years meant nothing.
His hand rose.
It trembled.
Then it struck the mat.
Tap.
Cole immediately released.
No punishment.
No extra second.
No humiliation.
Greg rolled onto his side, coughing.
Cole stood.
The contrast was brutal.
The man who had demanded respect was now struggling to breathe.
The man accused of being a street thug stood quietly beside him.
Cole looked around.
"That's the difference."
Nobody spoke.
"Control isn't about hurting someone."
He looked at Derek.
"Control is knowing you can hurt them and choosing not to."
Sarah
Sarah sat against the wall.
Her hands were still trembling.
She had watched everything.
Part of her wanted to leave.
Another part wanted to stay because something inside her was changing.
For two years, she had believed surviving meant becoming tougher.
She had tolerated difficult partners.
Ignored uncomfortable jokes.
Accepted rough treatment because she didn't want to appear weak.
She had thought tapping was failure.
Now she understood.
Tapping wasn't weakness.
Ignoring a tap was.
Cole walked over.
He crouched beside her.
"Are you okay?"
Sarah nodded.
Then shook her head.
"I don't know."
He looked at her throat.
The bruise was becoming darker.
"Does it hurt?"
"Yes."
"We're getting it checked."
She nodded.
Tears appeared.
"I'm sorry."
Cole frowned.
"For what?"
"For calling you."
"You didn't."
"I didn't even know you were here."
"I came to pick you up."
Sarah looked at him.
"You saw everything?"
"Yes."
She swallowed.
"Why didn't you stop him sooner?"
Cole paused.
"Because I wanted to make sure I understood what happened."
Sarah looked down.
"He knew I tapped."
"I know."
"I tapped immediately."
"I know."
"He looked right at me."
Cole nodded.
"I know."
Her voice broke.
"Nobody stopped him."
Cole's expression softened.
"That wasn't your fault."
