The crystal chandeliers of Ashcombe Manor glittered like frozen stars, casting rivers of golden light across the polished marble ballroom. More than three hundred of the city's wealthiest guests laughed beneath towering floral arrangements while a string quartet performed softly from the balcony.

It was supposed to be the engagement celebration of the year.

Julian Ashcombe, thirty-nine, heir to the Ashcombe shipping empire, stood beside his fiancée, Victoria Sterling, accepting congratulations from politicians, investors, and old family friends.

Everything looked perfect.

At least from the outside.

Julian had mastered the art of wearing calm like a tailored tuxedo. Ever since his parents died years earlier, he'd carried the burden of protecting the Ashcombe legacy alone. Success came easily.

Peace never did.

Victoria, meanwhile, adored attention more than affection.

She sparkled beneath thousands of blue sequins, smiled flawlessly for photographers, and measured every guest by the labels they wore.

To her, appearances weren't everything.

They were the only thing.

Outside, rain began tapping gently against the ballroom windows.

Near the service entrance, a tiny figure stood shivering beneath the awning.

She couldn't have been older than seven.

Her dress was faded pink, patched at both knees.

Her shoes didn't match.

Clutched tightly in her small hands was a velvet pouch.

Inside rested twelve old pearls.
