Startled, the little girl stumbled backward.

The velvet pouch slipped from her hands.

The pearls scattered across the marble floor.

Tiny white circles rolled in every direction.

Some guests stepped over them without noticing.

Others laughed.

Lily dropped to her knees.

"No..."

She crawled desperately after each pearl.

"Please..."

"Those are my mommy's..."

Tears blurred her vision.

No one moved.

Except one man.

Julian.

Without saying a word, he loosened his tuxedo jacket, knelt beside the child, and began collecting the pearls one by one.

"It's okay," he said gently.

"We'll find them."

Lily looked up through tears.

"Thank you, mister."

Julian smiled softly.

Then his fingers froze.

One pearl felt different.

He turned it beneath the chandelier's light.

Tiny markings circled its surface.

Not scratches.

An engraving.

His heart stopped.

It couldn't be.

The Ashcombe family crest.

A crown resting above intertwined oak branches.

Only twelve pearls like these had ever existed.

His grandmother had commissioned them decades earlier.

Each family member received exactly one.

Every heir knew the story.

Every pearl was documented.

Except one.

The missing pearl.

The one that disappeared with...

His aunt.

Eleanor Ashcombe.

Forty years ago.

Julian stared at the child.

"Where did you get this?"

Lily hugged the remaining pearls protectively.

"My mommy gave it to me..."

She swallowed.

"...before she went to heaven."

The ballroom had become silent.
