Victoria turned to Marcus, her eyes wide with disbelief and indignation. "Know him? Marcus, what on earth are you doing? This is Mr. Arthur Pendelton. He is the owner of this entire property, the building, and the land it stands on."

The silence that followed was absolute. The air felt suddenly twice as cold. Marcus’s mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out. The blood rushed to his ears as the reality of the situation washed over him. The man he had blocked, spoken down to, and physically restrained was the very founder of the conglomerate that signed his paychecks every two weeks.

Arthur Pendelton looked gently at Victoria, giving her a reassuring nod. "Good evening, Victoria. Please, don't be distressed. I chose not to announce my visit tonight."

He then slowly turned his attention back to Marcus, whose hands were now trembling at his sides.

"I arrived this evening unannounced," Arthur explained, his voice remaining measured and clear, "specifically to observe how guests are greeted when they step up to our doors. I wanted to see the true face of our establishment when no one believes the owner is watching."

Arthur paused, letting the weight of his words settle over the grand entrance.

"For me," Arthur continued, staring directly into the young guard's eyes, "the biggest concern tonight is not whether you recognized my face or remembered my name. I do not care about personal fame. My concern—and my great disappointment—is how quickly assumptions replaced basic human courtesy the moment you looked at me."
