Marcus swallowed hard, his face flushed with deep shame. "Mr. Pendelton, sir... I... I was just trying to protect the standard of the building. I thought—"

"You thought that a person's dignity is measured by the price of their jacket," Arthur interrupted gently, yet firmly. "That is not a standard. That is prejudice."

Arthur took a step closer to the entrance, looking out across the illuminated street before turning back to face both the guard and his director.

"His message was simple," Arthur said, addressing not just Marcus, but the entire ethos of the institution he had built over forty years. "Respect should never depend on someone’s clothing, status, or superficial identity. Every single human being who walks up these steps and through these doors deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness, and fundamental decency. If we lose sight of that, then no amount of marble, gold, or fine architecture can make this place anything more than an empty shell."

Marcus bowed his head, unable to meet the founder's eyes. "I am deeply sorry, sir. I truly am."

Arthur looked at the young man for a long moment. He did not fire him on the spot, nor did he indulge in anger. Instead, he left the young guard with a final thought to carry with him.

"Let this evening be a lesson, Marcus—not a punishment, but a truth to live by. Never judge the heart or the worth of a person by the coat they wear. True elegance begins with humility."
