"Exactly."

The timer beeped.

Brandon raised his hands.

"Ready to get embarrassed?"

Evan lifted his guard.

"I'm ready."

The timer started.

Brandon charged.

And three seconds later, the entire gym stopped laughing.

Three Seconds

Brandon came forward like a truck.

His first step shook the mat.

He threw a right hand.

Fast.

Heavy.

Designed more to intimidate than to score.

Evan slipped outside it.

Brandon barely noticed.

He swung again.

Evan moved.

The punch cut through empty air.

Then Brandon tried to grab him.

That was the mistake.

Evan stepped inside.

His left hand caught Brandon's wrist.

His right hand controlled the elbow.

For one brief moment, Brandon's enormous body leaned forward.

Evan pivoted.

The movement was almost invisible.

There was no dramatic wind-up.

No roar.

No wasted energy.

Just a precise turn.

Brandon's balance disappeared.

His feet left the mat.

He hit the ground with a loud thud.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Brandon stared at the ceiling.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The timer had barely reached three seconds.

Evan released him immediately.

"You okay?"

Brandon didn't answer.

Coach Mercer stepped forward.

"Brandon?"

The big man blinked.

"I'm fine."

He sat up.

The crowd erupted.

"What just happened?"

"Did he trip?"

"No way."

"That wasn't a trip."

Brandon stood.

His face had changed.

The laughter was gone.

"Again."

Evan looked at Coach Mercer.

The coach hesitated.

"Brandonβ€”"

"Again."

Evan nodded.

"If you want."

Brandon attacked harder.

This time he lowered his stance and shot forward.

Evan sprawled.

Brandon grabbed a leg.

For half a second, it looked like Brandon had him.

Then Evan rotated his hips.

His knee slid behind Brandon's leg.

His hand controlled the shoulder.

He turned.

Brandon rolled.

Evan followed.

Suddenly Brandon was flat on his back again.

Seven seconds.

The gym exploded.

Brandon shoved himself upright.

"What are you?"

Evan stood.

"A guy who doesn't want to hurt you."

That sentence made everything worse.

Brandon's jaw tightened.

"You think you're better than me?"

"No."

"Then stop making me look stupid."

Evan looked genuinely confused.

"I'm not trying to."

Brandon charged again.

Coach Mercer shouted.

"Enough!"

But Brandon was already moving.

This time Evan didn't throw him.

He simply stepped aside.

Brandon stumbled.

Evan touched his shoulder.

A tiny push.

Brandon's own momentum carried him to the edge of the mat.

He stopped himself.

The gym fell silent again.

Brandon turned slowly.

Evan wasn't smiling.

He wasn't celebrating.

He wasn't mocking him.

That somehow made the defeat feel worse.

Because there was nothing to hate.

Only the truth.

Brandon wasn't losing because Evan was stronger.

He was losing because Evan understood something Brandon had forgotten.

Strength wasn't the same thing as control.

And somewhere near the wall, Victor Hale quietly stood.

"Daniel."

The coach looked at him.

Victor's voice was barely audible.

"That man isn't a beginner."

The Question

Brandon walked off the mat.

Nobody laughed now.

People made space for him.

He grabbed his water bottle and drank half of it.

His chest rose and fell.

His pride hurt more than his body.
