Coach Mercer approached.

"Take five."

Brandon wiped his mouth.

"Who is he?"

"I don't know."

"You let strangers into this gym?"

"He's a member."

"Since when?"

"Three weeks."

Brandon stared at him.

"Three weeks?"

Mercer nodded.

"He doesn't talk much."

"Obviously."

Across the room, Evan sat alone.

He was wrapping his hands.

A young fighter named Lucas approached him.

"Where'd you learn that?"

Evan looked up.

"Learn what?"

"That throw."

Evan shrugged.

"Different places."

"Military?"

Evan paused.

"Some."

Lucas's eyes widened.

"What branch?"

Evan smiled faintly.

"That's a long story."

Brandon overheard.

He walked over.

"Tell it."

Evan looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because I want to know who dropped me."

"You fell."

"Don't."

Evan studied him.

"You challenged me."

"And you humiliated me."

"I didn't."

Brandon leaned closer.

"Then prove it."

Coach Mercer immediately stepped in.

"Brandon."

"No. I want another round."

"You've already had three."

"I want five."

Evan stood.

"I'll go."

Mercer frowned.

"Why?"

Evan looked at Brandon.

"Because he won't stop thinking about it otherwise."

The coach sighed.

"Light sparring."

Brandon nodded.

Evan nodded.

The round began.

This time Brandon didn't rush.

He circled.

Evan watched.

Thirty seconds passed.

Neither attacked.

The crowd grew restless.

Then Brandon feinted.

Evan reacted.

Brandon shot low.

Evan sprawled.

Brandon transitioned.

Evan countered.

They moved faster.

The gym became quiet again.

Brandon was strong.

Very strong.

But Evan was always one step ahead.

When Brandon tried pressure, Evan redirected it.

When Brandon pushed, Evan disappeared.

When Brandon reached, Evan controlled the distance.

Finally Brandon found himself caught in a position he couldn't escape.

Evan held him there.

Not hurting him.

Just controlling him.

"Tap," Evan said.

Brandon refused.

Evan waited.

"Brandon."

Nothing.

"You're not proving anything."

Brandon clenched his teeth.

Then tapped.

Evan immediately released him.

The round ended.

Brandon remained on the mat.

He looked at Evan.

For the first time, there was no anger in his eyes.

Only confusion.

"Who taught you?"

Evan didn't answer.

Victor Hale did.

"I did."

Everyone turned.

Brandon stared.

Victor walked toward them.

"You trained him?"

"Years ago."

Evan looked at Victor.

"I thought you weren't going to tell anyone."

Victor smiled.

"You've been hiding long enough."

The Name Behind the Silence

Victor Hale was seventy-one years old.

Most people knew him as the quiet old man who occasionally helped Coach Mercer.

They didn't know much else.

He rarely talked about his past.

But when he stepped onto the mat, even the younger fighters became respectful.

Victor looked at Brandon.

"You're talented."

Brandon didn't know how to respond.

"But you're trying to win every exchange with force."

Brandon frowned.

"Isn't that the point?"

"No."

Victor pointed toward Evan.

"Watch him."

Evan stood quietly.

Victor continued.

"He doesn't fight the person in front of him."

Brandon looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

"He fights the mistake."

Nobody spoke.

Victor continued.

"Every time you move, you create an opportunity. Evan doesn't overpower those opportunities. He waits for them."
