Marcus simply shook his head, a faint, mocking smile touching his lips.

"Yes, he has an illegal, highly dangerous fuel pump on his property," Brenda lied smoothly into the phone, pacing back and forth on the edge of the driveway. "I approached him to issue a standard compliance warning, and he became completely unhinged. He refused my orders, he is acting aggressively, and I fear for my safety. Please send someone right away."

She hung up the phone and glared at Marcus, crossing her arms in a mirror image of his posture. "They're on their way. You're going to be in handcuffs by noon. People like you need to learn who runs this neighborhood."

"People like me?" Marcus asked quietly, his voice laced with a dangerous edge.

"People who don't respect authority," Brenda snapped back, though she took a small step backward, suddenly intimidated by the sheer stillness of the man standing before her.

It took less than ten minutes for the wail of a siren to cut through the suburban quiet. A black-and-white city patrol cruiser turned the corner, its light bar flashing bright blue and red, and pulled up directly behind Brenda’s white SUV.

A young police officer stepped out of the vehicle. He was Caucasian, in his early thirties, dressed in a crisp, dark navy uniform. He looked professional, but his eyes darted nervously between the massive Black man standing by the vintage truck and the woman in the red blazer who was already sprinting toward him.

"Officer! Thank God you are here!" Brenda cried out, practically throwing herself at the young cop. She pointed a dramatic, trembling finger at Marcus. "That is the man! He refused my lawful HOA orders, he is hoarding dangerous chemicals, and he became violently hostile when I asked him to comply!"

The officer held up a hand to calm her down, resting his other hand cautiously on his utility belt. He took a few steps up the driveway, assessing the scene. He saw the red pump, the vintage truck, and the tall man standing calmly with his arms crossed.

"Sir," the officer called out, his voice firm but cautious. "I need you to step away from the pump and keep your hands where I can see them while I figure out what happened here."

Marcus didn't argue. He slowly uncrossed his arms, ensuring his movements were deliberate and non-threatening, and took two steps backward, away from the truck. He looked at the young officer with a steady, analyzing gaze.

Brenda stood directly behind the officer, a smug, triumphant smile plastered across her face. She looked at Marcus as if she had already won the war.
