"I think we'll stay right here," Julian replied, adjusting his position on the lounger to get a better angle with his camera. "I wouldn't want to miss the grand finale."
Heavy footsteps sounded on the stone pathway leading from the side gate. A moment later, a uniformed police officer stepped into the backyard. He was a tall, heavily built man in his late thirties, wearing a dark navy uniform, a duty belt loaded with equipment, and a stern, no-nonsense expression.
Brenda immediately sprang into action. She rushed toward the officer, practically blocking his view of the yard, and began to weave her narrative.
"Officer! Thank goodness you are here," Brenda cried, pointing her clipboard at Julian. "I am Brenda, the President of the HOA. This man has illegally occupied the pool area with a massive group of unauthorized individuals. When I asked him to show guest passes, he became hostile and refused to leave!"
The officer, conditioned to take control of a chaotic scene, looked past Brenda. He saw Julian, a large, intimidating man sitting calmly on a chair, holding a phone up like a weapon. The officer’s training kicked in. He perceived the relaxed, defiant posture as a lack of compliance.
The officer marched toward Julian, stopping right beside Brenda, inadvertently forming a united front with the trespasser.
The officer rested his hand near the radio on his belt, his posture rigid. He looked down at Julian, his brow furrowed in a deep scowl. The heat of the afternoon sun beat down on his dark uniform, making him irritable and eager to resolve the call quickly.
"Sir," the officer commanded, his voice booming with unquestionable authority. He took a half-step forward and raised his left hand, palm facing Julian in a universal 'stop' gesture. "Cooperate now, or this situation can get a lot more serious. Put the phone down and step away from the pool."
