For the briefest moment, the pleasant expression disappeared.

Then it returned.

“I hope you reconsider,” she said. “You wouldn’t want to make things difficult for yourself.”

Ethan straightened.

“Was that a threat?”

“Oh, not at all,” Brenda replied quickly. “Just a friendly reminder. This community values cooperation.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Here’s my reminder. One more fake notice, and I file a harassment complaint. You can play queen of the HOA all you want, but you have no authority over me.”

Brenda’s smile twitched.

She turned and walked away, her heels clicking sharply against the pavement.

Ethan watched her go.

He thought that would be the end of it.

He was wrong.

The next morning, garbage appeared across his lawn.

A week later, someone knocked over his mailbox.

Then the whispers began.

Neighbors stopped talking when Ethan approached. People watched him from their porches. A few avoided his eyes altogether.

At first, Ethan assumed it was coincidence.

Then he ran into Harold Tate at a gas station.

Harold had lived in the area for decades. He was not a man who enjoyed gossip.

“Hope you get things sorted out,” Harold said.

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Harold sighed.

“Brenda’s been talking. Says you’ve got legal trouble. Says there might even be a warrant.”

Ethan stared at him.

“A warrant?”

Harold nodded grimly.

“You know how she is.”

Ethan watched the gas pump numbers climb.

“No,” he said quietly.

“This isn’t HOA politics.”

And for the first time, he began to wonder just how far Brenda Miller intended to go.

The Fake Warrant

The answer arrived the following morning.

A thick envelope marked FINAL NOTICE sat in Ethan’s mailbox.

Inside was an official-looking document filled with bold lettering and legal language.

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH HOA POLICIES WILL RESULT IN LEGAL ACTION.

Below it came the sentence that finally made Ethan laugh.

A warrant has been issued for your continued refusal to adhere to community guidelines.

He leaned against his kitchen counter and read it again.

Then he laughed harder.

Ethan Ward had spent years working around real warrants.

He knew what they looked like.

He knew what authority was required to issue them.

And he knew an HOA president could no more issue an arrest warrant than she could declare war on another state.

There was no judge’s name.

No court.

No case number.

No agency.

Just one signature at the bottom.

Brenda Miller, HOA President.

Ethan’s amusement slowly faded.

This was no longer merely harassment.

Someone who had spent years enforcing federal law understood the difference between arrogance and fraud.

Brenda had crossed the line.

And she seemed determined to keep walking.

Ethan sat at his desk, studying the document.

He could have called a lawyer.

He could have filed a complaint.
