“I don’t need her humiliated.” Holloway studied him.

“That isn’t part of the process.” Samuel nodded.

“Good.”

Margaret was not handcuffed immediately. Lena asked her to remain near the patrol car while Holloway and Aaron reviewed the entire sequence.

They photographed the bat. They photographed the food and broken dishes.

Samuel provided receipts from the caterer. The destroyed items included rented serving equipment that would require replacement.

Initial estimates placed total damage above two thousand dollars. The amount made the potential charge more serious than Margaret seemed to understand.

Holloway called the on-duty magistrate for guidance after consulting departmental policy. Based on the video and witness statements, officers had probable cause for destruction of property and trespass after Samuel had expressly withdrawn any implied permission for Margaret to remain.

The threatening display of the bat required separate evaluation. Holloway did not pile on charges simply because evidence looked ugly.

Samuel appreciated that too. He had spent enough of his career watching weak charges undermine strong cases.

Margaret’s first response when Holloway explained she would be taken before a magistrate was disbelief. “You are arresting me?”

Holloway answered, “I’m taking you into custody based on the conduct documented here.” Margaret looked toward Samuel.

“Because he’s a general.” Holloway’s face hardened.

“No.” Margaret almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?” Holloway pointed toward the patio.

“I expect you to understand that the video existed before I knew his occupation.”

Margaret looked at Aaron. “He saluted him.”

Aaron answered quietly. “I did.”

“There.” She sounded triumphant.

Aaron continued, “And I wish I hadn’t.”

Samuel looked toward him. Margaret appeared confused.

Aaron said, “The salute was a military reflex because I recognized a former commander.”

“So you’re biased.” Aaron nodded slightly.

“Which is why Sergeant Holloway reviewed the evidence independently.”

Margaret had no answer. Holloway instructed Lena to secure the bat.

When the handcuffs appeared, Samuel walked toward the patio rather than watching. He heard Margaret saying Franklin would call the chief.

Holloway told her she could contact counsel through the usual process. No one responded to the threat.

Samuel stood beside Elaine’s ruined birthday table. That mattered more.

Renee’s vehicle arrived before police left. She stepped out with Daniel, and both froze when they saw three cruisers.

Samuel sighed. “I told you to wait.”

Renee marched toward him. “You said minor neighbor problem.”

“It was minor at the time.” She saw the wreckage.

“Dad.”

Daniel walked past them and picked up the fallen photograph of Elaine. The glass frame had cracked.

He wiped peach filling from the corner with his sleeve. Samuel turned away.

That was when the morning finally reached him. Not the bat.

Not Margaret. Not the police.

Elaine’s face behind broken glass. Samuel sat down on the brick step.

Renee crouched beside him. “Are you hurt?”

“No.” “Are you sure?”

“Yes.” His voice changed.

“Mom’s lunch is ruined.” Renee looked around.

“No, it isn’t.”

Samuel almost laughed. “I can see it.”

“She didn’t own the lunch.” Renee stood.

“She broke some food.” Samuel looked toward her.

“She broke all the peach cobbler.”

“That is serious.” Daniel joined them.

“Capital offense.” Samuel laughed despite himself.

The sound loosened something. Renee started crying.
