To Brenda, this dismissal was the ultimate insult. How dare this teenager ignore the HOA President? Her face flushed with anger, she pulled her smartphone from her pocket and dialed 911.

"Yes, police?" she said, her voice artificially panicked. "I have a situation at 402 Maple Drive. There is a young Black male trespassing on private property. He’s refusing to leave and he’s becoming aggressive. I fear for my safety and the safety of the neighborhood. Send officers immediately."

Within minutes, the distant wail of sirens broke the suburban tranquility. Marcus dropped his sponge as two patrol cars screeched to a halt in front of his house. The flashing red and blue lights painted the manicured lawns in a harsh, alarming glow.

Three officers stepped out, their hands resting cautiously on their duty belts. In America, every young Black man knows the gravity of this situation. Marcus’s heart hammered in his chest. He slowly raised his hands, stepping away from the vehicle.

Brenda rushed toward the officers, pointing a trembling finger at Marcus. "That's him! He’s trespassing and refusing to leave. Arrest him!"

"Son, step away from the car and keep your hands where I can see them," the lead officer commanded, his voice stern.
