Judge Tolbert looked taken aback. "You went to the alleged victim's home yourself?"

"Yes, Your Honor. I knocked on her door, introduced myself, and asked if she would be willing to answer a few questions regarding the night in question."

A light chuckle echoed from the gallery. This time, it wasn't a mock at Elijah, but a sense of genuine admiration.

Judge Tolbert held out his hand. "Hand the document to the clerk."

The document was brought up to the bench. Tolbert adjusted his glasses and read the sworn statement silently. His eyebrows rose higher with every line.

"Mr. Carrington," Tolbert said, looking up from the paper. "Summarize the contents of this statement for the court."

"Gladly, Your Honor," Elijah said. "Mrs. Freeman states under penalty of perjury that on the night of August 14th, no break-in occurred at her home. She states that her flat-screen television and laptops were never stolen; in fact, she sold her old television set three weeks ago at a yard sale to an individual who paid in cash. She further states that she never called 911, never reported a burglary, and only discovered her name was involved in this criminal case when she read the local newspaper three days ago."

The courtroom erupted into quiet gasps and loud chatter.

"Silence in the court!" the bailiff called out, slamming his hand against the gallery rail.

Judge Tolbert’s smirk was long gone. His face was now a mask of stern intensity. He turned his gaze slowly toward Prosecutor Lindholm.

"Ms. Lindholm," Tolbert said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dangerous register. "Are you telling me the state brought felony burglary charges against a citizen without confirming whether an actual burglary ever occurred?"

Lindholm’s face turned bright red. She looked down at her file, frantically turning pages, then turned around to glare at Officer Haskins, who suddenly seemed very interested in inspecting his own boots.

"Your Honor... we... the prosecution relied on the official police narrative provided in the intake package—" Lindholm stammered.

"The police narrative appears to be built on sand, Ms. Lindholm," Tolbert interrupted coldly. Elijah did not sit down. He remained standing at the center of the courtroom, completely composed. He wasn't done yet.

"Your Honor," Elijah said, tapping the final folder on his desk. "There remains the matter of the property found in the back seat of the vehicle my brother was driving, as well as the charge of resisting arrest."

"Proceed," Tolbert said, leaning forward, completely captivated by the young man standing before him.

"The vehicle my brother was driving did not belong to him," Elijah explained. "It belonged to Mr. Marcus Vance, a known associate of Officer Haskins' brother-in-law. We have submitted registration records proving ownership. Isaiah had borrowed the vehicle two hours prior due to mechanical failure on his own car. Furthermore, we subpoenaed the serial numbers of the electronic items seized from the back seat. Those items were reported stolen four days prior from an pawn shop across town—a case that Officer Haskins was personally assigned to investigate and which remained unsolved until my brother was stopped."

The gallery was dead silent now. The implications of Elijah's words hung heavily in the air.

Elijah looked directly at Officer Haskins. "Officer Haskins, did you plant those previously recovered items into Marcus Vance's vehicle, wait for someone to drive it, and then execute a pre-planned arrest to close out your cold burglary case and improve your department clearance metrics?"

"Objection! Unfounded speculation!" Lindholm shouted, though her voice lacked conviction.

"I am not asking for speculation," Elijah responded immediately, turning to the judge. "I am pointing to the official police inventory records from four days ago, which show these exact serial numbers listed in Officer Haskins' custody log."
