Daniel’s eyebrows pulled together.

“Your uncle?”

Emily kept her eyes on her husband.

“Bring the documents from the blue file. And call Nathan Cole before you leave.”

There was a brief pause.

Robert’s voice changed instantly.

“What happened?”

“He started early.”

Daniel’s face went still.

Vanessa lowered her glass.

Robert did not ask what Emily meant.

He only said, “I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

Emily ended the call.

Daniel forced a smile.

“This is ridiculous. You’re calling relatives into a private disagreement?”

Emily leaned against the counter, strangely calm.

“It stopped being private before we got married.”

Something cold moved through Daniel’s eyes.

Vanessa recovered first.

She slid off the stool and folded her arms.

“I don’t know what kind of spoiled princess act you’re trying to pull, but Daniel is your husband now. Couples have disagreements. Wives don’t call attorneys every time they’re asked to contribute to the household.”

Emily looked down at the shattered plate.

The plate had belonged to her grandmother.

So had the house.

That was the part Daniel and Vanessa had apparently forgotten.

The six-bedroom home in Connecticut had been passed to Emily through a protected family trust after her grandmother’s death. Daniel had moved in three weeks before the wedding, claiming it would be easier to settle before their honeymoon.

Emily had believed him.

Or at least, she had wanted to.

But five nights before the ceremony, she had gone into Daniel’s home office looking for the seating chart.
