Emily opened the folder.

She lifted the draft petition, the refinance schedule, and the handwritten plan.

“From your office.”

Daniel’s anger vanished.

In its place came something more revealing.

Panic.

“You had no right to search my private files.”

“In my home, inside a desk I purchased, while looking for our wedding documents?”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“You told me you destroyed those.”

Nathan’s head lifted.

Robert’s expression sharpened.

Emily remained perfectly still.

Vanessa realized what she had said a second too late.

Daniel turned on her.

“Shut up.”

Nathan calmly removed his phone.

“For clarity, Ms. Mercer, are there additional documents that were destroyed?”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

Daniel slammed his hand down on the counter.

“No one says another word.”

The security officer moved closer.

Daniel pointed at Emily.

“You think you’ve won because you have a few recordings? You married me. You stood in front of two hundred people and promised your life to me.”

Emily’s eyes burned, but she refused to let the tears fall.

“I promised my life to the man you pretended to be.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You’ll regret this.”

Robert stepped between them.

“That sounded like a threat.”

Daniel reached for his keys.

“It was a warning.”

He walked toward the hallway.

Vanessa hurried after him.

“Wait. What about my bags?”

Emily looked directly at her.

“You have ten minutes to collect them.”

Vanessa’s expression filled with hatred.

“You always thought you were better than us.”
