It remembered one.
Daniel looked at her more carefully.
“Where did you train?”
Elena's eyes stayed on Ryan.
“Years ago.”
“How many?”
She hesitated.
“Long enough.”
Ryan laughed.
“That's not an answer.”
Elena finally looked directly into his eyes.
“I wasn't trying to give you one.”
The crowd became silent again.
Ryan stepped forward.
“Let's go.”
Daniel raised his hand.
“Begin.”
Ryan moved first.
He didn't attack.
He feinted.
A quick twitch of his left shoulder.
A small step.
He expected Elena to react.
She didn't.
Ryan feinted again.
Nothing.
He circled.
Elena followed him with her eyes.
Not her head.
Her eyes.
Ryan's confidence began to disappear.
Then he threw a light jab.
Elena moved.
Not backward.
Forward.
She slipped outside the punch and tapped his chest with two fingers.
The contact was so light that several students didn't understand what had happened.
Ryan froze.
Elena stepped away.
Someone whispered:
“What was that?”
Ryan stared at her.
Elena's expression remained calm.
“Again?” she asked.
The room became completely silent.
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“Yeah.”
He came forward again.
This time, he wasn't testing her.
He wanted to prove something.
And Elena knew it.
That was the first mistake he made.
The second was assuming she was afraid.
Because she wasn't.
Not even a little.
The Wrong Woman
Ryan attacked harder.
A jab.
Cross.
Low kick.
Elena moved through the sequence without panicking.
She blocked the kick with her shin, stepped away from the cross, and allowed the jab to pass just inches from her face.
Ryan reset.
The crowd murmured.
“Nice.”
“Did you see that?”
Ryan heard them.
His breathing changed.
He attacked again.
This time, Elena countered.
She caught his wrist.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But that fraction was enough.
She turned her hips and redirected his momentum.
Ryan stumbled.
He recovered before falling.
The students went quiet.
Daniel's eyes sharpened.
Ryan stared at Elena.
She released his wrist.
“Sorry.”
“Don't be.”
His voice was colder.
“You've trained.”
“A little.”
He laughed without humor.
“Right.”
Ryan advanced.
Elena didn't retreat.
They stood almost chest to chest.
Ryan suddenly grabbed for a clinch.
Elena's hands rose.
She framed against his shoulders.
Ryan attempted to drive her backward.
She pivoted.
His momentum carried him past her.
He caught himself.
Elena was already behind him.
She tapped his shoulder.
Ryan spun.
She was gone.
A murmur rolled through the academy.
One of the younger students lowered his phone.
“What the hell?”
Ryan heard it.
His pride was beginning to take control.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Ryan.”
“I've got it.”
“You're supposed to be working technique.”
“I am.”
“You're escalating.”
Ryan looked at him.
“I'm fine.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Then act like it.”
Ryan nodded.
He turned back to Elena.
She looked almost apologetic.
That irritated him more than anything.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Like what?”
“Like you're waiting for me to calm down.”
“I am.”
A few people laughed.
Ryan's face hardened.
“You think this is funny?”
“No.”
“Then stop smiling.”
Elena realized she was smiling.
“I wasn't aware I was.”
Ryan stepped toward her.
“Who trained you?”
Elena didn't answer.
“Military?”
Silence.
“Police?”
Silence.
“Competition?”
Still nothing.
Ryan smiled.
“Okay. Mystery woman.”
He raised his gloves.
“Let's find out.”
Daniel watched carefully.
There was something familiar about Elena's movement.
Not the style.
The discipline.
She wasn't wasting energy.
She wasn't trying to dominate.
She wasn't reacting emotionally.
She was reading.
Ryan threw a combination.
Elena blocked the first punch.
Slipped the second.
Moved under the third.
Ryan followed with a body kick.
Elena caught it.
For a moment, Ryan's balance disappeared.
Elena swept his standing leg.
Ryan hit the mat.
The entire academy gasped.
He immediately rolled away and stood.
Nobody laughed.
Nobody spoke.
Elena waited.
Ryan looked at the floor.
Then at her.
His face was red.
Daniel raised his voice.
“Reset.”
Ryan breathed heavily.
Elena nodded.
Daniel looked at Ryan.
“Controlled.”
Ryan nodded.
But his eyes said something else.
He wanted to win.
Not because there was anything to win.
Because people were watching.
That was the problem.
Ryan had spent years believing that strength meant making people back away.
Elena had spent years learning something very different.
