“I got busy.”

Ryan stared.

“You competed?”

“A long time ago.”

“How long?”

“Seventeen years.”

Someone in the crowd whispered:

“Seventeen?”

Ryan looked at her again.

The woman standing in front of him suddenly seemed very different.

Not because she had become more impressive.

Because he had finally stopped underestimating her.

The Old Name

The academy didn't return to normal after that.

For the next twenty minutes, nobody trained properly.

Everyone wanted to know who Elena was.

Daniel asked her to sit in his office.

Ryan remained on the mat.

He didn't leave.

Elena sat across from Daniel.

“You should have told me,” he said.

“Told you what?”

“That you were Elena Ward.”

Elena smiled.

“Would it have changed anything?”

“Yes.”

“That was exactly what I didn't want.”

Daniel leaned back.

“You don't understand how many people studied your fights.”

“I don't think that's true.”

“It is.”

Elena looked down.

Daniel knew better than to push.

“So why come here?”

She was quiet for several seconds.

“My daughter.”

Daniel waited.

“She moved to another city for college.”

Elena smiled.

“She called me last month and said she was joining a self-defense class.”

“That sounds good.”

“It scared me.”

Daniel understood.

“You wanted to learn how to protect yourself?”

“No.”

She looked at her hands.

“I wanted to remember who I was before I became afraid.”

Daniel said nothing.

Elena continued.

“After Michael died, I stopped training. Then I stopped thinking about training. Eventually, I convinced myself that the woman I used to be didn't matter.”

Daniel nodded.

“But today,” she said, “I walked into this place and remembered.”

“Remembered what?”

“That I wasn't weak.”

Daniel smiled.

“You never were.”

Meanwhile, Ryan was sitting alone on the edge of the mat.

A young student named Marcus approached him.

“Ryan?”

“What?”

Marcus hesitated.

“That was incredible.”

Ryan looked at him.

“You think so?”

“Yeah.”

Ryan stared at the floor.

“I lost.”

Marcus shrugged.

“It's sparring.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“You don't understand.”

“What?”

Ryan looked across the academy.

Elena was standing near the office, talking to Daniel.

“I spent years thinking being strong meant nobody could embarrass me.”

Marcus didn't answer.

Ryan continued.

“Turns out all it takes is one person who doesn't care about embarrassing you.”

Marcus smiled.

“You're going to ask for a rematch.”

Ryan looked at him.

“No.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“No?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I want to learn.”

It was the first honest thing he had said all day.

Later, when the evening class began, Daniel asked Elena whether she wanted to stay.

She did.

She didn't spar again.

Instead, she watched.

She noticed students making the same mistakes she had made decades earlier.

Too much tension.

Too much aggression.

Too much desire to win.

She walked toward a young woman practicing combinations.

“Can I show you something?”

The student nodded.

Elena adjusted her stance.

“Relax your shoulders.”

The student tried.

“Again.”

She tried again.

“Better.”

Ryan watched from across the room.

For the first time, he saw Elena not as an opponent but as a teacher.

She didn't demand attention.

She didn't need it.

Students naturally gathered around her.

One question became three.

Three became ten.

Soon, the academy was full of conversation.

Ryan stood quietly.

Then he approached her.

“Elena.”

She turned.

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“What made you stop?”

She knew what he meant.

“Michael.”

Ryan waited.

“My brother.”

“What happened?”

“He died.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

“I'm sorry.”

“Thank you.”

“Is that why you're back?”

Elena thought for a moment.

“No.”

“What is?”

She looked around the academy.

“All the years I spent thinking that losing someone meant losing myself.”

Ryan nodded slowly.

Then he said:

“I think I understand that.”

Elena looked at him.

“Do you?”

Ryan smiled faintly.

“Not completely.”

She smiled.

“Good answer.”

The next morning, Ryan arrived at the academy earlier than usual.

He found Elena already there.

She was alone on the mat.

Moving through an old sequence.

Slowly.

Precisely.

Ryan watched.

Then asked:

“Will you teach me?”

Elena stopped.

“You already have a coach.”

“I know.”

“Then why ask me?”

“Because I need to learn how to stop fighting everyone.”

Elena studied him.

Then nodded.

“Okay.”

Ryan stepped onto the mat.

And for the first time in years, he wasn't there to prove he was better than somebody.
