Gerald slumped back down into his chair, the last remaining vestige of his formidable color completely drained from his skin, leaving him looking like an old, broken man playing dress-up in a $5,000 suit. Victor watched him go with a quiet, hollow satisfaction, before turning his attention back to Whitney, who was still standing beside the table with her notepad clutched against her apron like a shield. “Well, Miss Sawyer,” Victor said softly, a faint, polite smile returning to his lips. “It appears your evening shift took an unexpected turn.” Whitney let out a long, slow breath, running a hand through her hair as the adrenaline finally began to recede, leaving behind a dull, throbbing ache behind her temples. “You could say that,” she replied dryly. “I was supposed to be off at ten. My roommate was making pasta.” Victor laughed, a genuine, warm sound this time. He reached into his coat pocket and placed a thick, heavy rectangular envelope right beside the twenty-dollar bill Gerald had dropped earlier in the night. “I believe,” Victor said, sliding the envelope across the mahogany wood toward her, “this belongs to you.”
