For four months, strange problems followed Owen Mercer around his home. It started as a trickle of bizarre nuisances and quickly swelled into a flood of targeted harassment.

He would wake up to find fast-food wrappers and crushed cans scattered intentionally across his pristine flower beds. Sharp roofing nails were repeatedly sprinkled across his driveway, waiting for his truck tires. Whenever he spent a quiet afternoon working in his garden, muddy water would inexplicably pour over the wooden fence.

The disturbances did not stop at night. Some evenings, blaring music erupted from the house next door at exactly 2:00 a.m. The bizarre part was not just the noise, but the timing: the music stopped the exact moment Owen flicked on his bedroom light.

Then came the letters. Anonymous complaints from the homeowners association arrived almost weekly, building a ridiculous catalog of infractions:

  • His trash cans were visible from the street.

  • His porch light was too bright.

  • His truck remained in the driveway too long.

  • His backyard shed was allegedly leaning three inches toward the property line.

Once, someone even reported that Owen was operating a commercial woodworking business from his garage. He was not. He had only been peacefully repairing an antique dining table for his daughter. Yet, every single HOA complaint carried the exact same menacing sentence at the bottom:

Continued violations may result in escalating fines or legal action.

Whenever Owen confronted his next-door neighbor, Beverly Knox, about the strange occurrences or the sudden noise, she simply tilted her head and smiled.

"You’re imagining things, Owen," she would say, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.

Beverly was sixty-two, silver-haired, and always dressed as though she might be photographed for a neighborhood newsletter. She wore bright, elegant scarves in winter and wide gardening hats in the sweltering summer. She volunteered at every single HOA event. She knew exactly which families were behind on their dues, whose teenagers had been arrested, and which couples were quietly separating.

She also had a high-definition security camera mounted directly above her garage. Oddly, it pointed straight toward Owen’s driveway.

Owen had lived beside Beverly for seven years without any serious trouble. They were never close friends, but they had been cordial. Then, four months earlier, everything changed. Owen had refused an offer to sell his house. After that, the relentless harassment began.
