"The complaints aren’t working," she whispered into her phone. "He still refuses to sell."

Owen froze. The privacy fence between their properties was six feet tall, but there was a narrow, warped gap near the back corner that allowed sound to pass through clearly. He silently set down his heavy hammer, pulled his phone from his pocket, started a voice recording, and crouched in the shadows beside the fence.

Beverly paced nervously. "I’ve made him miserable for months. What else do you expect me to do?"

A man answered through the phone. Owen could not decipher every single word, but the night was perfectly still. Several damning phrases drifted through the wooden boards:

  • "...luxury entrance..."

  • "...deadline next Friday..."

  • "...fifty thousand after closing..."

Owen’s breath caught in his throat. The puzzle pieces violently slammed into place. Beverly had not been harassing him over petty parking disputes, noise, or a fabricated neighborhood feud.

A corporate developer needed Owen’s property to build a private luxury entrance for a new subdivision. Beverly had struck a devil's bargain: she had been promised fifty thousand dollars if she successfully drove him out of his home before the developer's deadline. Every anonymous complaint, every ruined plant, and every late-night disturbance had been a calculated tactic in a paid psychological war.

"The man is stubborn," Beverly hissed into her phone. "He keeps repairing everything." The caller’s voice grew louder, laced with irritation. "If he stays another week, we lose the entire contract." Beverly lowered her voice to a dangerous whisper. "Then tomorrow we make the house unsafe."

Owen felt the temperature of the air seem to drop. He leaned just a fraction of an inch closer to the gap.

"What exactly are you suggesting?" Beverly asked.

The caller answered, but a loud delivery truck passed on the road behind the neighborhood, its engine drowning out most of his words. Owen strained to listen, only catching chilling fragments: "...already inside..." "...inspection..." "...electrical panel..."

Beverly sounded hesitant. "No one gets hurt?" The caller replied quickly. Even from the narrow gap, Owen saw her mouth tighten into a thin line. "Fine," she said coldly. "But this ends tomorrow."

Owen shifted his weight. Underneath his shoe, a dry branch snapped with a sharp crack.
