PART ONE — THE SIX WORDS THAT BROUGHT ME HOME

“Dad, please don’t marry Miss Victoria.”

Those six words brought me home two days early.

My five-year-old son had never called during one of my business trips before. Grace, his nanny, usually sent photographs at breakfast and called if Noah developed a fever or had trouble sleeping.

That afternoon, my phone rang while I was walking into a meeting in Chicago.

Noah was whispering.

“Where’s Grace?” I asked.

“She’s downstairs.”

“Are you safe?”

He did not answer.

Then I heard a door open somewhere behind him.

Noah’s breathing changed.

“Dad, please come home.”

The call ended.

I canceled the meeting, boarded the first flight back to New York, and told no one except the estate’s security director that I was returning.

Victoria believed I would remain in Chicago until Friday.

Our wedding was scheduled for Sunday.

By the time I reached the estate, rain was falling across the stone courtyard. I entered through the side door because I did not want to alert anyone in the main hall.

I heard Noah crying before I reached the staircase.

The sound came from the marble corridor outside my late wife’s bedroom.

Victoria stood over Grace.

Grace was on her knees, holding Noah against her chest and shielding him with her body.

One side of her face was red.

A broken glass lay on the floor.

Finger-shaped bruises were already forming around Noah’s wrist.

Victoria wore a cream suit chosen for a final wedding interview later that afternoon. Her hair was perfect. Her voice was not.

“You’re only an employee,” she snapped. “I’m going to be the lady of this house in six days. You don’t get to question how I discipline my future son.”

Grace tightened her arms around Noah.

“He lost his mother,” she said. “You will not frighten him into calling you Mom.”
