My chest tightened.

After Noah’s birth, I had developed an irregular heartbeat. The condition was minor, but I took a low-dose medication.

Eleanor died after losing consciousness behind the wheel on a clear afternoon.

Investigators believed she suffered an undiagnosed cardiac episode.

The medication bottle recovered from her vehicle disappeared before toxicology testing was completed.

Nathan had been the family member who collected her belongings from the hospital.

“I didn’t kill her,” he said quickly.

No one had accused him yet.

The detective noticed that too.

Grace reached inside the drawer and removed a sealed evidence bag.

One white tablet lay inside.

“Eleanor gave it to me the day before she died,” she said. “She told me not to surrender it to anyone connected to the Mercer family.”

The police preserved it for testing.

Nathan moved toward the front door.

Two officers stopped him.

He looked at me.

Then he smiled.

“You still don’t know why Eleanor created that trust.”

Noah stood at the top of the stairs.

He had slipped away from the housekeeper watching him.

In his hands was the sealed envelope from Eleanor’s desk.

Across the front, she had written:

FOR DANIEL—WHEN NOAH ASKS WHO HIS REAL FATHER IS.

Nathan pointed toward it.

“Open the letter.”

Grace’s face lost all color.

Then my brother said the words he believed would destroy me:

“Ask why Eleanor never told you Noah wasn’t your biological son.”
