Outside, the mechanical symphony swelled into a deafening roar, the unmistakable sound of a small army of motorcycles and armored vehicles converging on their position from multiple directions. A lot more are coming, the leader observed grimly, stepping toward the shattered remains of the windows to peer out into the swirling dust storm whipped up by the approaching convoy, listening intently to the rhythmic shifting of gears and the aggressive revving of engines. They’re bringing reinforcements, he added, his hand tightening around the grip of his weapon as the harsh glare of high-beam headlights began to paint the interior walls with sweeping, erratic shadows. Without missing a beat, John bent down, retrieved his weapon from the dusty floor, and checked the magazine with practiced, effortless efficiency, looking down at his son with a heartbreaking combination of profound grief and fierce, unyielding pride. I wanted you to have a normal life, John confessed, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. I let you hate the ghost of me, let you believe the worst stories whispered in the dark, because living with the illusion of an absent, uncaring father was infinitely safer than letting you know the terrifying truth of who I was and what I was running from. The boy stared up at him, the initial wave of shock and terror slowly receding, giving way to something far more complex, something darker and infinitely more dangerous. That fear was hardening, crystallizing into a potent emotion that had no business existing in a child of his age.
