“You know him.”
His mother began crying.
“Where did you hear that name?”
“Who was he?”
“Ethan, please.”
“Mom.”
“He was your father's partner.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“What happened?”
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
His mother whispered:
“Your father told me never to speak about him.”
“Why?”
“Because Jonathan knew the truth.”
“What truth?”
She hung up.
Ethan stared at the phone.
Then someone knocked.
Daniel stood outside.
He held an old envelope.
“You should see this.”
Ethan opened the door.
“What is it?”
Daniel handed him the envelope.
“Your father's original partnership agreement.”
Ethan opened it.
Three names appeared.
Richard Harrison.
Jonathan Cole.
Daniel Cole.
Ethan stared.
“Three founders.”
Daniel nodded.
“Three.”
“What happened to Jonathan?”
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“Your father destroyed him.”
THE MISSING BILLIONS
The partnership agreement changed everything.
Ethan spent the next three days investigating.
He discovered that Harrison Global had been built on technology developed by Jonathan Cole.
Jonathan had invented a revolutionary infrastructure system that allowed bridges and large structures to be assembled faster and more safely.
Daniel had managed the construction teams.
Richard Harrison had handled financing and expansion.
Together, they created a company.
But Richard wanted control.
He secretly transferred ownership of Jonathan's patents.
Then he used shell companies to move profits away from the partnership.
When Jonathan discovered the theft, he threatened to expose Richard.
That's when everything changed.
Jonathan disappeared.
The official story was that he had fled the country.
But Ethan found evidence suggesting otherwise.
Twenty-two years earlier, Jonathan had been arrested on charges of financial fraud.
The charges were later dismissed.
But his reputation was destroyed.
His wife left him.
His company shares vanished.
His patents were transferred.
And his family was ruined.
Ethan looked at the records.
Then he found something shocking.
Jonathan had not disappeared.
He had been living under another name.
For twenty years.
In a small town three hundred miles away.
Ethan immediately drove there.
But when he arrived, he found an empty house.
A neighbor told him:
“He left last month.”
“Where did he go?”
“I don't know.”
Ethan returned to his car.
His phone rang.
Daniel.
“Where are you?”
Ethan asked.
“Home.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Jonathan was alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because he was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
“Of what?”
“Of what would happen if the wrong people learned he was alive.”
Ethan looked around.
“Victor Lang?”
Daniel was silent.
Ethan's heart sank.
“You know about Victor.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Daniel sighed.
“Because Victor was working with your father.”
“What are they planning?”
“Not they.”
“What?”
“Victor is planning something your father started twenty-two years ago.”
