PART ONE — THE WOMAN EVERYONE WALKED PAST

The elderly janitor dropped her cleaning cloth when the billionaire CEO suddenly knelt in front of her.

Every conversation inside the glass corporate lobby stopped.

Security guards moved forward.

Senior executives stared.

No one understood why Adrian Cole—the most powerful man in the building—was kneeling on the marble floor before a woman everyone else barely noticed.

Her name tag said MARTHA.

She wore a faded blue uniform, worn black shoes, and thick protective gloves that covered both hands and most of her wrists.

She had worked the night shift at Cole Meridian Tower for eleven months.

Most employees walked past her without learning her name.

Some left coffee cups beside full trash cans and expected her to pick them up.

Others continued private conversations in front of her because they assumed a janitor was part of the furniture.

That morning, Trevor Lang, the company’s executive vice president of acquisitions, had complained that she moved too slowly.

“Try to finish before the investors arrive,” he told her. “This lobby represents a billion-dollar company.”

Martha lowered her eyes.

“Yes, sir.”

Trevor walked away without noticing the slight tremor in her hands.

Adrian had not noticed her either.

Not until a young analyst dropped a glass bottle near the elevators.

It shattered across the marble.

Martha hurried forward with a broom and dustpan.

As she reached for a large piece of glass, her right glove caught against the handle.

The fabric pulled back.

For one second, Adrian saw the edge of a deep burn scar twisting across her wrist.

He stopped walking.

The briefcase slipped from his hand.

It struck the floor with a hard, empty sound.

His chief of staff, Vivian Ross, turned.

“Adrian?”

He did not answer.

The scar continued beneath Martha’s sleeve.

A thick, uneven line crossing the inside of her wrist and branching toward her palm.

Adrian had seen that pattern before.

Not in a photograph.

In memory.

Fire above him.

Smoke filling his mouth.

A woman carrying him against her chest while flames burned through the sleeves of her nightgown.

A scar he touched years later in dreams, although he had been only four when he saw it.

Adrian walked toward the janitor.

Martha noticed him approaching and immediately bent lower over the broken glass.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Cole. I’ll have this cleaned in a minute.”

“Take off the glove,” he whispered.
