“He wanted me where he could see me,” she said.
“And you accepted.”
“I wanted to see you.”
“For eleven months?”
“I was afraid the first time.”
She looked toward the conference-room window.
“I saw you enter the lobby and thought I would run to you. Then Charles stood beside you. You smiled at him like a father.”
Adrian remembered that morning.
Charles had just helped negotiate a major acquisition.
Adrian embraced him in front of employees.
Martha watched from beside a trash cart.
“I thought you loved him,” she said. “I thought you would believe him.”
“I might have.”
The admission hurt both of them.
Martha nodded.
“That’s why I waited.”
She worked nights.
Copied discarded memos.
Photographed visitor logs.
Listened while executives discussed the redevelopment of Warehouse One.
When she learned Charles planned to demolish the building, she knew whatever remained beneath it would disappear.
She intended to reveal herself that week.
Then her glove slipped.
Adrian looked at the scars again.
“I walked past you.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I spoke at employee events about dignity while my own mother cleaned the lobby.”
“I was not ashamed of the work.”
“I know.”
“Then do not use my job to punish yourself.”
The words sounded like something a mother would say.
Adrian began crying again.
This time, quietly.
Martha reached across the table and covered his hand.
Neither pretended thirty-two years could be repaired by one embrace.
They sat together while investigators prepared to search the foundation of the empire built between them.
