Thomas Hale — Independent Contractor.

Then came a report dated 1978.

The report described an emergency repair.

A pressure failure had occurred beneath the neighborhood.

The repair had been completed.

But the final paragraph had been blacked out.

Arthur photographed the page.

Then he heard footsteps.

He looked up.

Brenda was standing across the archive room.

She looked at the folder.

Then at Arthur.

“You found it.”

Arthur closed the folder.

“You knew.”

Brenda sat beside him.

“I knew there was something.”

“How much?”

“Not enough.”

“That's not an answer.”

Brenda looked down.

“My father worked for the county.”

Arthur froze.

“Your father?”

“He was the engineer who supervised the project.”

Arthur looked at the photograph.

The two men.

Thomas Hale.

Brenda's father.

They had worked together.

“What happened?”

Brenda swallowed.

“My father died when I was seventeen. Before he died, he told me never to disturb the western boundary.”

“Why?”

“He said something had been hidden there.”

“What?”

“I don't know.”

Arthur studied her.

“Why did you build your garage over the chamber?”

“I didn't know it was there when I bought the property.”

“Then how did you find out?”

“During construction.”

“And?”

Brenda looked away.

“The contractor found an underground room.”

Arthur leaned closer.

“What did you do?”

“We sealed it.”

“Why?”

“Because there were records inside.”

Arthur stared at her.

“What kind of records?”

“Property records.”

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

Brenda's voice dropped.

“They were older than the houses.”

Arthur felt a chill.

“What did they say?”

“They said the land had been divided differently.”

Arthur understood.

“The current property line isn't the original line.”

“No.”

“Then where is the real line?”

Brenda looked directly at him.

“That's what everyone has been trying to find.”

“Everyone?”

She nodded.

“My father's business partner.”

“Who?”

“Richard Vale.”

Arthur recognized the name.

Vale Development had built half the neighborhood.

“What does he want?”

“The land.”

Arthur shook his head.

“There are hundreds of houses here.”

“Exactly.”

Brenda explained.

The old service corridor ran through the neighborhood.

Beneath it were underground structures and utility rights.

If someone could prove that the corridor remained active, large sections of the neighborhood could potentially be subject to access rights.

And someone had been trying to recover those rights for years.

Arthur looked at the folder.

“Why?”

Brenda whispered one word.

“Money.”

That evening, Arthur returned to the western boundary.

He brought a metal detector.

He scanned the ground.

The machine beeped.

He dug.

Six inches down, he found a steel box.

Inside were documents wrapped in plastic.

The first document was a land transfer agreement.

The second was an engineering drawing.

The third was a handwritten letter.

Arthur recognized the handwriting.

His father's.

He read it twice.

Then a third time.

The letter said:

If anyone ever tries to move the boundary, do not trust the survey they bring. The original marker is still beneath the western fence. The line was changed after the emergency repair. The reason was not engineering. It was ownership.

Arthur's hands began to shake.

He turned the page.

At the bottom was a sentence that changed everything.

Brenda's father knows why.

Arthur looked toward Brenda's house.

The secret wasn't buried beneath the property.

It was buried between their families.

The next morning, a survey crew arrived.

Three trucks.

Four workers.

And Richard Vale.

He stepped out wearing a dark coat despite the warm weather.

Arthur recognized him immediately from the old records.

Vale smiled.

“Mr. Hale.”

Arthur didn't return the smile.

“You're on my property.”

Vale glanced toward the fence.

“That's debatable.”

Arthur held up the old document.

“Not anymore.”

Vale's expression changed slightly.

Brenda came outside.

“Richard, what are you doing here?”
