“Finishing something your father started.”

Brenda went pale.

Arthur stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

Vale ignored him.

He told the survey crew to begin.

Arthur called the sheriff's office.

Within twenty minutes, Deputy Collins arrived.

He examined the documents.

Then the survey equipment.

“This is a civil property dispute,” he said.

Vale smiled.

Arthur handed him the letter.

“Then explain this.”

Deputy Collins read it.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get this?”

“Underground.”

Vale stepped forward.

“That's private material.”

Arthur laughed.

“Private?”

The deputy looked at Vale.

“Do you have documentation authorizing this survey?”

Vale produced a packet.

Arthur reviewed it.

The survey referenced a boundary line that did not match the old county records.

Deputy Collins noticed it too.

“Who commissioned this?”

Vale didn't answer.

Arthur pointed to the company name.

“Vale Development.”

The deputy sighed.

“This isn't going to be resolved today.”

But Arthur knew something had changed.

The official records were now in question.

That afternoon, Daniel Mercer returned.

He conducted a complete survey.

When the results came back, he called Arthur.

“You were right.”

“About the line?”

“Yes.”

“What does it show?”

“The fence is not the legal boundary.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Where is the actual boundary?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Under the fence.”

Arthur frowned.

“Exactly where?”

“That's the problem.”

Daniel explained that the original boundary had been established using an older reference system.

The modern markers had been placed later.

Someone had shifted them.

Not accidentally.

Deliberately.

Arthur asked the obvious question.

“Who?”

Daniel said nothing.

Arthur understood.

They needed proof.

Not suspicion.

Proof.

That night, Arthur and Brenda met in the garage.

For the first time, they worked together.

Brenda brought the documents from the underground chamber.

Arthur brought his father's letter.

Together, they reconstructed the history.

In 1978, the emergency repair had damaged part of the municipal corridor.

The county needed access.

But several landowners objected.

A temporary boundary adjustment was created.

It was supposed to last one year.

Instead, someone quietly converted the temporary arrangement into a permanent property map.

The result favored a private development company.

Richard Vale's father had been involved.

But there was more.

Brenda discovered a payment ledger.

Her father's name appeared.

So did Thomas Hale's.

Arthur stared at it.

“Did they take money?”

Brenda shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why are their names here?”

“They received money.”

“For what?”

She turned the page.

“Legal defense.”

Arthur realized what had happened.

Their fathers had not participated in the fraud.

They had discovered it.

And someone had tried to silence them.

The next morning, Brenda found a note on her front door.

Three words.

Stop digging, Brenda.

She showed Arthur.

He called the sheriff.

But before anyone arrived, the note disappeared.

The cameras showed no one approaching the house.

Arthur realized the problem.

Someone had access to the neighborhood security system.

And that meant the secret was much larger than a property dispute.

Arthur and Brenda decided to reopen the underground chamber.

Not alone.

Deputy Collins accompanied them.

Daniel Mercer came too.

They entered through an access point beneath Arthur's garage.

The passage was narrow.

Concrete walls surrounded them.

Old pipes ran along the ceiling.

After fifty feet, they reached a steel door.

The lock was ancient.

Arthur used the key they had found beneath the fence.

The door opened.

Inside was a room filled with shelves.

Most were empty.

But one shelf remained untouched.

On it were boxes labeled by year.

Arthur opened the first box.

Maps.

Letters.

Invoices.

Photographs.

Then he found a cassette tape.

An old recorder sat beside it.
