THE WOMAN WITHOUT A BELT

 The Laughter

It started with a laugh.

Not a loud laugh.

Not the kind that filled the room.

It came from somewhere near the mirrors.

Then another voice joined it.

Then another.

Within seconds, the quiet atmosphere inside the training hall had changed.

Forty-five-year-old Angela Brooks stood barefoot at the edge of the mat, looking at the three men in front of her.

She wasn't angry.

That was what made the silence uncomfortable.

Anger would have been easier.

A person who became angry could be dismissed as emotional. A person who shouted could be told to calm down. A person who stormed out could be labeled difficult.

Angela did none of those things.

She simply stood there.

Calm.

Straight-backed.

Her gray training shirt hung loosely over black athletic pants. Her dark hair was pulled into a tight braid. There was nothing dramatic about her appearance.

No medals.

No belt.

No patches.

No expensive equipment.

No gym bag covered in logos.

She looked like someone who had walked into the wrong building.

Across from her stood Derek Sloan.

Thirty-two years old.

Six feet two.

Two hundred and fifteen pounds.

A black belt wrapped firmly around his waist.

Four red stripes crossed one end of it.

Behind him stood two of his training partners, both younger than Angela and both smiling.

Derek looked at her from head to toe.

Then he glanced at the gym owner.

"You're serious?"

The owner, Marcus Hill, didn't answer immediately.

Angela did.

"Yes."

Derek smiled.

"You're here for the advanced class?"

Angela nodded.

A few people around the room laughed again.

Marcus raised one hand.

"Everyone, relax."

Derek wasn't interested in relaxing.

He had been the star of Iron Ridge Combat Academy for three years.

He had won regional tournaments.

He had fought professionally twice.

He had built half his social-media following around videos of him submitting bigger opponents.

People came to the gym because they wanted to train with Derek.

Some wanted his approval.

Others wanted to beat him.

Nobody wanted to be ignored by him.

And now a forty-five-year-old woman without a belt had walked into his advanced session.

Derek pointed toward her waist.

"You don't have a belt."

Angela looked down.

"No."

"You know this is an advanced class, right?"

"Yes."

"Advanced."

"I heard you."

Derek's smile faded slightly.

One of the men behind him whispered something.

Derek laughed.

"Look, nobody's trying to embarrass you."

Angela said nothing.

"I'm just telling you that this isn't some beginner fitness class."

"I know."

"Then maybe you should start with the fundamentals."

Angela looked at Marcus.

"I was told I could train here."

Marcus nodded.

"You can."

Derek turned toward him.

"Marcus—"

"She paid her membership," Marcus said. "She's allowed on the mat."

Derek stared at Angela again.

"Fine."

He stepped backward.

"Who wants to pair with her?"

Nobody moved.

Angela waited.

Finally, Derek shrugged.

"I'll do it."

A few people looked at each other.

Marcus frowned.

"Derek."

"What?"

"Controlled sparring."

"Of course."

Angela stepped onto the mat.

The room became quiet.

She walked toward the center.

Derek followed.

He bounced lightly on his feet.

Angela didn't.

"What's your experience?" he asked.

"Some."

"How much is some?"

"Enough."

Derek laughed.

"There it is again."

Angela tilted her head.

"What?"

"That confidence."

She looked at him.

"It's not confidence."

"Then what is it?"

"Experience."

Derek grinned.

"Same thing."

The timer beeped.

Derek moved first.

He didn't attack hard.

At least, that was what he told himself.

He stepped forward and reached for Angela's shoulders.

She moved half a step.

His hands found nothing.

Derek blinked.

Angela was still standing in front of him.

He tried again.

This time faster.
