People loved turning another person's pain into entertainment.
Angela sighed.
"Fine."
She stepped onto the mat.
Derek followed.
The room gathered around them.
Marcus shook his head.
"This is controlled."
Derek nodded.
"Of course."
The timer started.
Derek moved cautiously.
Angela waited.
He shot forward.
She sidestepped.
He turned.
She caught his arm.
He tried to pull away.
She released.
Derek attacked again.
This time he managed to grab her.
For a moment, Angela was trapped against his chest.
The crowd reacted.
Derek smiled.
"Got you."
Angela's eyes remained calm.
Then she moved.
Her foot shifted.
Her hip turned.
Derek's grip broke.
He stumbled.
Angela rotated underneath his arm and took his back.
Derek dropped to the mat.
Angela controlled his position.
She did not apply pressure.
She simply held him.
Derek struggled.
She adjusted.
He struggled again.
Nothing changed.
"Tap," Marcus warned.
Derek refused.
Angela tightened the position slightly.
"You're fine," she whispered.
Derek's face reddened.
He tried to escape.
Angela followed.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Fifteen.
Finally—
Tap.
The sound echoed across the room.
Angela immediately released him.
Derek rolled away.
The room was silent.
Angela stood.
Derek remained on the mat.
His breathing was heavy.
He looked at her.
"How?"
Angela extended her hand.
Derek ignored it.
He stood by himself.
"You've been lying."
Angela frowned.
"About what?"
"You said you didn't need to prove anything."
"I don't."
"Then why did you do that?"
Angela looked at him.
"Because you asked."
Derek laughed bitterly.
"No. I challenged you."
"And you got an answer."
That sentence ended the conversation.
But it didn't end the problem.
Because someone had filmed the entire exchange.
By Sunday morning, the video was online.
The caption read:
BLACK BELT HUMILIATED BY UNKNOWN 45-YEAR-OLD WOMAN
The video spread quickly.
Comments appeared by the hundreds.
Some praised Angela.
Others attacked Derek.
Some accused the video of being staged.
Derek saw every comment.
And each one made him angrier.
On Monday morning, he confronted Marcus.
"You let this happen."
Marcus looked up from the front desk.
"Let what happen?"
"You let her embarrass me."
Marcus sighed.
"Derek, you did that yourself."
Derek stared at him.
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
"No, you don't."
Marcus stood.
"You challenged someone you didn't know."
"She made me look weak."
Marcus shook his head.
"That's not what happened."
Derek walked away.
But before he left, he said something Marcus would remember.
"I'm not finished."
The Old Photograph
Angela thought the situation would disappear.
It didn't.
Instead, the video brought people to Iron Ridge.
Some wanted to meet her.
Others wanted to challenge her.
Angela refused all of them.
She wasn't interested in becoming famous.
One afternoon, Marcus found her sitting alone on the back steps.
"You okay?"
"Yes."
"That's a lie."
Angela smiled.
"Probably."
Marcus sat beside her.
"You should know Derek is talking about fighting you again."
"I know."
"He wants a public match."
Angela sighed.
"No."
"That's what I told him."
Angela looked toward the parking lot.
"Why does he need this?"
Marcus thought for a moment.
"Because the video changed how people see him."
Angela shook her head.
"No."
Marcus looked at her.
"Then what?"
Angela's voice softened.
"Because he thinks losing to me means he's worth less."
Marcus didn't answer.
Angela continued.
"That's the trap."
"What trap?"
"Thinking skill determines value."
She looked at her hands.
"Daniel taught me that."
Marcus smiled faintly.
"Tell me about him."
Angela hesitated.
Then she reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old photograph.
Two young people stood on a competition mat.
Angela was in a white gi.
Daniel stood beside her.
Both were smiling.
