"It wasn't a trip."
Angela stepped back.
Michael watched carefully.
"Continue."
Ryan stood.
This time he was irritated.
Angela could see it.
That was dangerous.
Not because anger made Ryan stronger.
Because anger made him forget the purpose of the round.
He shot forward.
Angela moved.
Ryan caught one leg.
Several students gasped.
But Angela did not panic.
She framed against his shoulders.
Turned her hips.
Created space.
Ryan attempted to drive through.
Angela shifted.
Suddenly Ryan's grip weakened.
She turned behind him.
Controlled his arm.
Ryan dropped to one knee.
Angela could have continued.
She did not.
Michael raised his hand.
"Reset."
Ryan stood again.
His face had changed.
The amusement was gone.
Angela noticed.
"Ryan."
He looked at her.
"Yes?"
"You're getting frustrated."
Several students shifted uncomfortably.
Ryan smiled without humor.
"I'm fine."
Angela nodded.
"Then stay fine."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
He understood something now.
Angela wasn't trying to defeat Ryan.
She was teaching him.
Ryan attacked again.
This time, Angela moved differently.
She allowed him to establish contact.
Then she stopped moving.
Ryan pushed.
Angela absorbed.
He pushed harder.
Angela turned.
Ryan's own momentum carried him forward.
She guided him to the mat.
Not hard.
Not dramatically.
But completely.
Angela controlled his shoulder.
Ryan tried to move.
She adjusted.
Michael watched.
"Control," he said.
Ryan stopped.
Angela released immediately.
The round continued.
But everyone in the room understood that Ryan had already lost something more important than position.
He had lost certainty.
The two minutes ended.
Michael raised his hand.
"Time."
Angela stepped away.
Ryan remained standing.
Breathing heavily.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan did.
"Mom."
Angela turned.
"Yes?"
His face looked different.
Not proud.
Not excited.
Relieved.
And Angela knew why.
For the first time, Ethan had seen someone stronger than Ryan refuse to hurt him.
That was the lesson.
Not that Ryan could lose.
But that power could choose restraint.
The Heavyweight
Jason stepped onto the mat next.
He was smiling.
But the smile was forced.
Ryan had returned to the edge of the training area without speaking.
Derek crossed his arms.
Jason bounced lightly.
"You ready?"
Angela nodded.
"Are you?"
Jason frowned.
"Funny."
Michael stepped between them.
"Same rules."
Jason nodded.
Angela nodded.
"Begin."
Jason moved differently from Ryan.
Less technical.
More aggressive.
He immediately attempted to close distance and overpower Angela.
Angela saw the plan.
She moved laterally.
Jason followed.
He grabbed for her upper body.
Angela framed.
Jason pushed.
Angela gave ground.
Then he pushed harder.
Angela changed direction.
Jason stumbled.
He caught himself.
A few students laughed.
Jason's face flushed.
"Don't rush," Angela said.
Jason stared at her.
"What?"
"You're rushing."
"I'm attacking."
"Those aren't always the same thing."
Jason stepped forward.
This time he was careful.
Better.
Angela noticed.
He tried to control her wrists.
Angela resisted just enough to test him.
Jason adjusted.
He attempted a body lock.
Angela widened her base.
Jason squeezed.
Angela waited.
Then she moved.
Her hips shifted.
Her hands created space.
Jason suddenly found himself holding less than he thought.
Angela stepped behind him.
Her arm crossed his upper body.
Jason froze.
Michael immediately raised his hand.
"Control."
Angela released.
Jason turned.
The room was no longer laughing.
The students were watching differently now.
Jason's next attack was smarter.
He began using feints.
Changing levels.
Testing her reactions.
Angela nodded.
"Better."
Jason stopped.
"Are you grading me?"
Angela looked at him.
"No."
"Then stop talking like that."
Angela's expression remained calm.
"Then stop training like you're trying to punish me."
The words landed heavily.
Jason looked toward Michael.
Michael said nothing.
Because he couldn't.
Angela was right.
Jason attacked again.
This time, he succeeded in taking Angela down.
The room gasped.
Jason landed on top.
For the first time, the situation looked dangerous.
Ethan took a step forward.
Angela remained calm.
Jason attempted to establish control.
Angela framed against his neck and shoulder.
Not choking.
Creating distance.
Jason adjusted.
Angela moved.
Jason tried to hold her down.
Angela waited.
Then shifted her hips.
One movement.
Two.
Jason lost balance.
Angela came underneath him.
Then around.
Then behind.
The position changed.
Jason was now trapped.
Angela controlled him.
Michael began counting.
"One."
Jason struggled.
"Two."
He tried to turn.
Angela adjusted.
"Three."
Michael stopped the round.
Jason lay still.
Angela released him.
He sat up.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he looked at her.
"Where did you train?"
Angela smiled faintly.
"That's a better question."
Jason looked annoyed.
"Are you going to answer it?"
"Eventually."
Michael stepped forward.
"One more."
Derek looked at Angela.
The heavyweight's smile had disappeared.
The Man Who Thought Size Was Enough
Derek Sloan was different.
Angela understood that before the round began.
Ryan had confidence.
Jason had competitiveness.
Derek had something heavier.
He believed his size made him difficult to question.
For most of his life, it probably had.
When Derek stepped into a room, people noticed.
