When he pushed forward, smaller people moved.

When he raised his voice, conversations stopped.

Angela had seen men like Derek before.

Not necessarily bad men.

But men who had spent so long discovering that size worked that they stopped learning other ways to solve problems.

Michael looked directly at him.

"Technical."

Derek nodded.

"No ego."

Derek smiled.

"You keep saying that."

"Because you keep needing to hear it."

The students became silent.

Derek stepped toward Angela.

"Ready?"

Angela looked at him.

"No."

The answer surprised him.

"What?"

"I'm not ready."

Derek laughed.

"Then why are you here?"

Angela looked toward Ethan.

Then back at Derek.

"Because neither was my son."

The room changed.

Ryan looked up.

Jason stopped stretching.

Michael's expression hardened.

Derek frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Angela said nothing.

Michael stepped closer.

"Angela."

She looked at him.

"My son asked someone to go lighter."

Michael understood immediately.

His eyes moved toward Ryan.

Ryan's face tightened.

Angela continued.

"He asked again."

Nobody laughed.

"He was afraid to complain because he thought people would call him weak."

Ethan stood against the wall.

His face had turned pale.

Angela looked at him.

"You don't have to be embarrassed."

Ethan looked down.

Ryan finally spoke.

"I didn't hurt him."

Angela nodded.

"I know."

Ryan looked confused.

"Then what's this about?"

Angela faced Derek.

"It's about what people learn when the stronger person refuses to listen."

Derek's expression hardened.

"You think that's me?"

Angela stepped toward him.

"I don't think anything yet."

Michael raised his hand.

"Begin."

Derek moved.

Angela moved too.

But this round was different.

Derek did not rush.

He had watched Ryan.

He had watched Jason.

He knew Angela could move.

So he used patience.

He closed distance slowly.

Angela circled.

Derek cut off the mat.

Good strategy.

Angela nodded slightly.

Derek reached.

Angela moved.

Again.

He reached again.

Angela created a frame.

Derek pushed through.

For the first time, Angela's feet slid backward.

The students gasped.

Derek smiled.

"There it is."

Angela said nothing.

He pushed again.

Harder.

Angela's expression changed.

Not fear.

Calculation.

Derek grabbed.

Angela allowed the contact.

Then she changed angle.

Derek tried to follow.

Angela moved beneath his center.

His weight shifted.

Suddenly, the larger man was off balance.

He caught himself before falling.

The room exhaled.

Derek looked surprised.

Angela said:

"Size works."

Derek stared.

"Yes."

"But it also commits you."

His jaw tightened.

Derek attacked.

Angela turned.

He followed.

She moved again.

Derek began working harder.

That was exactly what Angela wanted.

The more effort he used, the more information he gave her.

Eventually, Derek caught her.

His arms closed around her upper body.

Ethan's eyes widened.

Several students stood.

Derek's strength was obvious.

Angela could not simply force him away.

So she didn't.

She lowered her weight.

Created a frame.

Turned her hips.

Waited.

Derek squeezed harder.

Angela breathed.

Then she moved.

The shift was small.

Almost invisible.

But Derek's balance broke.

His feet adjusted.

Angela took the angle.

Suddenly, Derek was on his knees.

Angela controlled his upper body.

"One."

He pushed.

"Two."

He tried to stand.

Angela adjusted.

"Three."

Michael stopped the round.

Derek remained still.

Angela released him.

For several seconds, he did not move.

Then he sat up.

He looked at her.

Not angry.

Not amused.

Confused.

"How?"

Angela sat beside him.

The students were surprised.

She did not stand over him.

She sat.

"Because you were trying to beat me."

Derek frowned.

"And you weren't?"

Angela shook her head.

"No."

"Then what were you doing?"

"Listening."

Derek stared at her.

Angela continued.

"Ryan gets frustrated when his first plan fails."

Ryan looked down.

"Jason rushes when he feels challenged."

Jason crossed his arms.

Derek waited.

"And me?"

Angela looked directly at him.

"You believe pressure solves uncertainty."

The room was silent.

Derek looked away.

Angela stood.

The three rounds were over.

But the real lesson had only begun.

What Angela Had Come to Teach

Michael Delaney called everyone together.

Nobody moved toward the changing rooms.

Nobody rushed for water.

Even the younger students remained seated.

They understood that something important was happening.

Michael stood in the center of the mat.

Then he looked at Angela.

"Who are you?"

A few people laughed nervously.

Angela smiled.

"I'm Angela Brooks."

"You know what I mean."

She looked around the room.

Then toward Ethan.

Angela took a breath.

"I trained for a long time."

Ryan stared.

Jason shook his head slowly.

Derek remained silent.

"How long?" Michael asked.

"Twenty years."

The room reacted immediately.

Angela continued.

"Not all at once. Not perfectly. I competed for a while. I coached for a while."

Ryan looked at her.

"Black belt?"

Angela smiled.

"Several years ago."

Jason groaned.

"You could have mentioned that."

Angela looked at him.

"You didn't ask."

That produced a different kind of laughter.

This time, nobody was laughing at her.

Michael folded his arms.

"Why hide it?"

Angela thought about that.

"I didn't hide it."

She looked around the room.

"I just didn't lead with it."

Ethan watched her carefully.

Angela continued.
