“So?”
“When you reach, your shoulder follows.”
Jason moved again.
This time he attacked with both hands.
He expected Angela to retreat.
She did not.
She entered.
The movement was so quick that several people did not understand what happened.
One second Jason was reaching for her.
The next, Angela was behind him.
Her arm was across his upper chest.
Her body positioned perfectly against his.
Jason froze.
Angela whispered:
“If this were a real round, you would already be asking yourself how you got here.”
Michael stared.
Now he understood.
Angela released Jason immediately.
Jason stepped away.
His face was red.
“Again.”
Michael watched Angela.
“You good?”
Angela nodded.
Jason came forward harder.
This time there was less technique and more emotion.
Angela saw it.
She stepped aside.
Jason overcommitted.
Angela guided his arm.
Turned her hips.
And Jason hit the mat.
Not hard.
Not violently.
But completely.
The dojo became silent.
Jason stared at the ceiling.
Angela remained standing.
She had not even changed her breathing.
“Get up,” Michael said.
Jason stood.
His confidence had changed.
The laughter was gone.
He approached Angela more carefully now.
For the next thirty seconds, the round became a different kind of contest.
Jason no longer tried to overpower her.
He tried to understand her.
Angela moved with remarkable economy.
Nothing was wasted.
Every step had a purpose.
Every grip was temporary.
Every movement seemed designed to make Jason carry his own weight in the wrong direction.
At one point, Jason attempted a leg trip.
Angela anticipated it.
She shifted her hips.
Jason lost his balance again.
Angela could have taken him down.
She didn't.
She simply allowed him to stumble past.
Then the timer sounded.
Michael raised his hand.
“Time.”
Jason stood breathing heavily.
Angela looked almost unchanged.
A bead of sweat had appeared near her temple.
That was all.
Ryan stepped closer.
“You got lucky.”
Jason glared at him.
“Get on the mat.”
Ryan smiled.
“That’s the plan.”
Angela looked toward Jason.
“Are you hurt?”
Jason shook his head.
“No.”
“Good.”
She held out her hand.
Jason hesitated.
Then shook it.
Her grip was firm.
“Thank you for the round.”
Jason stared at her.
“You’re not what you said you were.”
Angela tilted her head.
“What did I say I was?”
“A mother.”
Angela smiled.
“I am.”
Jason said nothing.
Ryan stepped onto the mat.
Michael watched him closely.
Ryan was different.
Jason had been reckless.
Ryan was calculated.
He had spent years studying Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
He knew leverage.
He knew position.
He knew patience.
If anyone could expose Angela’s limits, Michael believed it would be Ryan.
Ryan bowed.
Angela bowed back.
Then the timer started.
Ryan did not rush.
He circled.
Angela watched.
For ten seconds, neither moved.
Then Ryan shot forward.
Angela reacted.
They connected.
Ryan secured her arm.
The students gasped.
For the first time, Angela appeared trapped.
Ryan smiled.
“Got you.”
Angela looked at his grip.
Then at his feet.
Ryan noticed.
“What?”
“You’re standing too tall.”
Ryan tightened his hold.
Angela shifted her weight.
Ryan’s balance changed.
Angela rotated under his arm.
Suddenly, the position reversed.
Ryan’s eyes widened.
Angela controlled his wrist.
His elbow.
His shoulder.
Ryan tried to turn.
Angela followed.
He attempted to pull away.
Angela moved with him.
Not fighting.
Guiding.
Ryan’s back touched the mat.
The students erupted.
Ryan immediately attempted to recover guard.
Angela did not engage recklessly.
She remained balanced.
Ryan tried to sweep.
Nothing.
He tried again.
Angela adjusted.
Nothing.
Ryan became frustrated.
Michael saw it.
That was dangerous.
Ryan was beginning to fight emotionally.
“Relax,” Michael called.
Ryan ignored him.
He reached for Angela’s leg.
Angela anticipated it.
She shifted.
Ryan suddenly found himself flat again.
Angela controlled his shoulder.
Not painfully.
But completely.
She leaned close enough for him to hear.
“You train hard.”
Ryan stared upward.
“Yes.”
“That’s good.”
Angela released him.
“But hard training is not the same thing as understanding.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
The timer sounded.
Two rounds.
Two black belts.
Neither had been injured.
Neither had been humiliated.
But both had been made to feel something unfamiliar.
Uncertainty.
Derek Sloan stepped forward.
The largest man in the dojo.
He looked at Angela.
Then at Ryan.
“Move.”
Ryan got up.
Derek stepped onto the mat.
Michael raised his hand.
“Derek.”
“What?”
“Technical.”
Derek nodded.
Angela studied him.
He was heavier than Jason.
Stronger than Ryan.
And unlike the others, Derek was not embarrassed.
He looked curious.
“Where did you learn?” he asked.
Angela said nothing.
Derek smiled.
“That secret?”
Angela looked at him.
“Not secret.”
“Then?”
“Not important.”
Derek’s smile faded.
The timer started.
And suddenly, the room felt different.
The Heavyweight
Derek moved slowly.
He did not rush Angela.
That was his first surprise.
Everyone expected him to use his size.
