Instead, he waited.

Angela respected that.

She could see he was thinking.

Jason had attacked.

Ryan had calculated.

Derek was observing.

For several seconds, they circled.

Derek reached forward.

Angela moved.

He tried again.

She moved again.

Derek smiled.

“You’re fast.”

Angela answered calmly.

“No.”

Derek frowned.

“No?”

“You’re slow.”

A few students nearly laughed.

Derek grinned.

“All right.”

Then he attacked.

The difference in strength was immediately obvious.

When Derek got hold of Angela’s shoulder, the room gasped.

He was powerful.

Angela's body shifted backward.

For the first time, Ethan moved forward nervously.

“Mom!”

Angela raised one hand slightly.

She was fine.

Derek attempted to control her.

Angela lowered her weight.

Her feet adjusted.

Derek pushed.

Angela moved.

Not against him.

With him.

His strength became momentum.

Angela turned.

Derek stumbled.

He caught himself.

The students were silent.

Derek looked surprised.

Then impressed.

“Okay.”

He came again.

This time, Derek tried to trap her against the edge of the mat.

Angela had less room.

The wall of mirrors stood behind her.

Derek closed the distance.

His arms reached forward.

Angela moved inside.

Derek's body suddenly froze.

Angela’s forearm rested against his upper chest.

Her other hand controlled his wrist.

Her head was positioned safely against his shoulder.

Derek tried to move.

He couldn't.

Not because Angela was stronger.

Because every direction he tried created a worse position.

Michael stared.

That was high-level control.

Derek finally stepped backward.

Angela released him.

The students began whispering.

“Who is she?”

“Was she a fighter?”

“I’ve never seen that.”

Ethan stood completely still.

He was remembering something.

A childhood memory.

His mother in the backyard.

Bare feet on the grass.

Moving slowly.

He had been seven years old.

“Mom, what are you doing?”

“Exercise.”

“Can you teach me?”

“When you're older.”

He had forgotten.

Until now.

Derek attacked again.

This time Angela allowed him closer.

Too close.

Derek wrapped his arms around her.

The students gasped.

A much larger man had finally secured a powerful position.

Ethan’s face went pale.

Michael took one step forward.

Angela whispered something.

Derek’s expression changed.

“What?”

Then Angela moved.

Her foot stepped behind Derek’s heel.

Her hips shifted.

Her upper body rotated.

Derek lost balance.

But Angela did not throw him.

She redirected him.

The heavyweight landed safely on his back.

The entire dojo went silent.

Angela stepped away.

Derek stared at the ceiling.

Then he laughed.

Not mockingly.

Not arrogantly.

Honestly.

He sat up.

“You could have thrown me harder.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Michael said technical.”

Derek stared at her.

Then he stood.

Something had changed.

The three men who had laughed earlier were no longer laughing.

The room had changed with them.

The timer sounded.

Michael raised his hand.

“Time.”

Angela bowed.

Derek bowed back.

Then Jason stepped toward Michael.

“Who the hell is she?”

Ryan looked at Angela.

Michael answered quietly.

“I don’t know.”

Angela heard him.

She smiled.

“You didn’t ask.”

Michael turned toward her.

“You’re right.”

For the first time, everyone was looking at Angela differently.

Not as Ethan’s mother.

Not as a visitor.

Not as a woman who had wandered into a martial arts school.

They were looking at her as a mystery.

Angela noticed.

And that was exactly what she had wanted to prevent.

Because once people knew what she had been, they stopped seeing what she was.

Michael walked toward her.

“Coffee?”

Angela looked surprised.

“Is that an interrogation?”

“Depends what you tell me.”

Angela laughed softly.

The students watched as she stepped off the mat.

Ethan followed.

But before leaving, Angela turned toward Ryan.

“Ryan.”

He looked at her.

“Yes?”

“My son asked you to go lighter.”

Ryan’s expression changed immediately.

The dojo became silent again.

This silence was different from the first.

This one carried guilt.

Angela continued.

“He told you his shoulder hurt.”

Ryan looked toward Ethan.

Ethan stared at the floor.

Ryan swallowed.

“I…”

“You did slow down.”

Angela nodded.

“For twenty seconds.”

Ryan’s face went pale.

Angela’s voice remained calm.

“Then you went hard again.”

“I didn’t think—”

“No.”

Angela interrupted.

“You didn’t.”

That sentence hit harder than shouting could have.

Ryan looked toward Michael.

Then Ethan.

Then Angela.

“I’m sorry.”

Angela studied him.

“Are you sorry because I can handle you?”

Ryan said nothing.

Angela continued.

“Or are you sorry because you hurt someone smaller than you?”

Ryan’s eyes lowered.

Angela waited.

Finally, he answered.

“The second one.”

For the first time that day, Angela looked satisfied.

“Good.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because that means you can change.”

The Woman Before Ethan

Michael closed the office door.

Angela sat across from him.

Ethan sat beside his mother.

Ryan, Jason, and Derek remained outside.

Nobody had left.

Nobody wanted to.
