Chapter 1: The Echo of the Wolf

The roadside diner was a cacophony of roaring engines and raucous laughter that afternoon, a sanctuary of grease and gasoline. Outside, the midday sun glinted off the chrome of dozens of motorcycles packed tightly into the gravel lot. Inside, twenty-three bikers claimed the long tables running parallel to the dust-streaked windows. The air was thick with the smell of stale coffee, frying burgers, and stories that had been exaggerated so many times over the years that the truth had long since faded into myth.

Anchoring the center of the chaos sat Mason Callahan. On the asphalt, the world knew him simply as Wolf.

He was a mountain of a man, built with heavy, immovable shoulders and scarred hands that spoke of a lifetime of hard miles. Silver threads wove through his dark, untamed beard, but it was his eyes that truly defined him—calm, calculating, and deeply observant. He carried the quiet stillness of a man who had learned decades ago that the loudest voice in the room belonged to the weakest soul. Across the back of his weathered leather vest, an enormous, meticulously stitched gray wolf surveyed the room, an emblem as notorious as the man wearing it.

Mason was halfway through raising his burger when the sudden, desperate grip of a small hand clamped onto the leather near his shoulder.

He paused, the heavy muscle of his back tensing, and slowly turned.

A young girl, no older than nine, stood trembling beside his chair. Her long brown hair was a damp, tangled mess, clinging to her cheeks. A smudge of dark dirt stained the side of her face. Her yellow shirt was violently torn near the hem, and her small sneakers were soaked through, leaving muddy footprints on the linoleum as if she had just clawed her way out of a drainage ditch. She was hyperventilating, her narrow chest rising and falling in sharp, jagged rhythms.

But it was her eyes that commanded Mason's absolute attention. She wasn't just scared; she was hunted. Her wide, frantic gaze stayed locked on the diner's entrance, waiting for a monster to walk through the door.
