His scarred, rock-steady hands began to tremble.

"My mom said it belonged to you," Lily whispered into the suffocating silence.

Cal went statue-still. Darren watched the biker's face drain of color.

Mason choked the words out, fighting past the tight knot in his throat. "What is your mother's name?"

"Grace. Grace Hart."

The name meant absolutely nothing to him. But the tarnished silver resting in the child's palm meant the universe. Mason extended a shaking hand, hovering just inches above the pendant before pulling back, terrified the illusion would shatter if he touched it.

"Where did your mother get this?"

Lily wiped her face with the back of her dirty sleeve. "From my grandma."

Mason’s chest seized. The air was suddenly too thin to breathe. "What was your grandma's name?"

"Caroline."

Cal whipped his head toward the window, his jaw tight, recognizing the ghosts stepping into the room.

Mason remained paralyzed, locked into Lily's gaze. "Caroline what?"

"Hart."

Mason breathed the true name into the space between them anyway. "Caroline Hayes."

Lily blinked, her tears pausing in confusion. "My grandma had that name before she got married."

Mason shoved his chair backward so violently it cracked against the drywall.

Twenty-eight years of buried grief, acceptance, and longing collapsed into a single, blinding millisecond. He saw Caroline laughing on the grassy banks of a winding river. He felt Caroline’s arms wrapped tight around his waist as they tore down a midnight highway on his very first bike. He saw her standing beneath the flickering neon of an old gas station sign, the rain soaking her hair, that silver pendant resting perfectly against her collarbone.

And then... the crushing, deafening silence.

She hadn't vanished into the night like a mystery novel. She had packed up her sparse apartment, disappeared across county lines, and sent him one brutal, agonizing letter. Don't look for me. I need a different life.

He had hunted for her anyway, tearing the state apart for a year until Cal had tracked down a rumor that she had fled west with another man. Eventually, the fire had burned down to embers, and Mason had stopped searching.
