The midday sun beat down relentlessly on the pristine, manicured lawns of the upscale suburban neighborhood. Marcus, a well-built man in his early thirties, stood on the stone steps of his front porch. His fitted maroon t-shirt clung to his athletic frame as he methodically organized a scattering of silver wrenches and measuring tapes. A few feet away, in the cool shade of the wooden awning, his seven-year-old daughter, Lily, stood wearing a bright lemon-yellow shirt and crisp white denim shorts, her small hands tightly gripping a heavy glass pitcher of freshly squeezed lemonade. The tranquil, idyllic silence of the afternoon was violently ruptured by the harsh screech of tires. A white golf cart swerved onto the edge of their driveway. From it stepped the neighborhood HOA president, a tall woman radiating unearned authority in an immaculate, striking crimson red suit. Trailing closely behind her was a heavy-set man entirely clad in a dark navy blue police uniform, his hand resting menacingly on his utility belt.
