"Evelyn," he began, "we've become concerned about your behavior."

She almost laughed.

"My behavior?"

"You've been accessing confidential financial information."

"Because money is missing."

Daniel glanced at the lawyers.

"That's exactly the problem."

One lawyer slid a folder toward Evelyn.

Inside was a series of bank records.

Her name appeared repeatedly.

Evelyn opened the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Her face went pale.

The accounts were real.

But she had never opened them.

"What is this?"

Daniel sighed.

"That's what we'd like to know."

The board chairman spoke.

"These transactions appear to involve company funds."

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

He wouldn't meet her eyes.

"You fabricated these."

Daniel finally looked up.

"No."

"Yes."

"Evelyn, please."

"You know I didn't do this."

He said nothing.

That silence hurt more than an accusation.

Within forty-eight hours, Evelyn was suspended.

Within a week, the newspapers reported that she was under investigation for financial fraud.

Within two weeks, Carter & Vale's investors had demanded her resignation.

And within a month, Daniel Vale stood before cameras announcing that the company would survive the "painful betrayal" of its former founder.

Evelyn watched the broadcast from her apartment.

Daniel looked devastated.

He spoke about integrity.

About responsibility.

About protecting employees.

Then he said the sentence that destroyed her public reputation.

"Evelyn was once someone I trusted completely. Unfortunately, trust cannot survive deliberate dishonesty."

She turned off the television.

For three years, Evelyn tried to prove her innocence.

But every time she found one answer, another question appeared.

Her accounts were frozen.

Her reputation collapsed.

Friends stopped calling.

Former employees avoided her.

Investors believed Daniel.

And Daniel became richer.

Much richer.

Until the night beneath the courthouse billboard.

The night Evelyn finally understood that he had made one mistake.

He had underestimated her memory.

The Forgotten Archive

Inside the courthouse, Evelyn walked past the reporters and entered a quiet hallway.

She didn't have a lawyer.

Not yet.

But she had something better.

A box.

She carried it under her coat.

Inside were documents she had protected for three years.

Old contracts.

Handwritten notes.

Server logs.

Meeting schedules.

And one small silver flash drive.

She entered an empty conference room.

Then she locked the door.

For years, Evelyn had told herself she kept the evidence because she hoped the truth would eventually matter.

That wasn't entirely true.

She had kept it because she knew Daniel.

Daniel never did anything without a reason.

He never made a mistake without first calculating whether the mistake could benefit him.

And three years earlier, on the final night before she was removed from Carter & Vale, Evelyn had copied one folder.

She remembered exactly what it was.

Project Meridian.

The folder contained records of every major financial transaction during the company's expansion.

Evelyn had copied it before her access was terminated.

But she had never opened the final encrypted file.

She didn't have the password.

Until now.

She stared at the flash drive.

Then someone knocked.

Evelyn froze.

"Ms. Carter?"

A woman's voice.

"Who is it?"

"Attorney Grace Miller."

Evelyn opened the door slightly.

Grace stood outside holding a leather briefcase.

She was in her late forties, with silver beginning to show in her dark hair.

"You don't know me," Grace said.

"No."

"But I know you."

"How?"

Grace stepped inside.

"Because my brother worked for Daniel Vale."

Evelyn closed the door.

"What happened to him?"

"His name was Thomas Miller. He was the company's internal systems administrator."

Evelyn stared at her.

"Was?"

Grace nodded.

"He died two years ago."

Evelyn remembered the name.

Thomas Miller.

She had met him several times.

Quiet.

Careful.

Always nervous around Daniel.

"What does this have to do with me?"

Grace opened her briefcase.

Inside were printed emails.

"Before Thomas died, he sent me these."

Evelyn picked up the first page.

An email from Thomas to Daniel.

I can't continue deleting these logs.

Evelyn's hands trembled.

She read the next.

You told me the archive would be temporary. It's been eighteen months.

Then another.

If Evelyn discovers what you've done, she'll expose everything.

Evelyn looked up.

"Why didn't you come forward?"

"Because Thomas was terrified."

"And now?"

Grace's expression hardened.

"Now I'm tired of being afraid."

She handed Evelyn another document.

It was a system log.

Three years earlier.

The night Evelyn had discovered the missing money.

At 11:43 p.m., someone had remotely accessed her workstation.

At 11:46 p.m., financial files were copied.

At 11:51 p.m., Evelyn's account was used to authorize a transfer.

At 11:53 p.m., Daniel's administrative account erased the access history.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

"It wasn't just financial fraud."

"No."

"He framed me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Grace sat down.

"Because you were the only person who could stop him."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Memories came flooding back.

Daniel's constant insistence that she trust him.

His sudden desire to restructure the company.

His anger when she questioned the numbers.

The mysterious investors.

The missing files.

The fake accounts.

Everything connected.

But there was still one question.

"Why come to me now?"

Grace smiled sadly.

"Because I received something yesterday."

She removed a sealed envelope.

"From Thomas."

Evelyn stared at it.

"After he died?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"He arranged for it to be delivered three years after his death."
