Grace placed it on the table.

The envelope contained a single sentence.

When Daniel thinks Evelyn has finally lost everything, give her the key.

Evelyn looked at Grace.

"The key to what?"

Grace pointed at the flash drive.

"Project Meridian."

Evelyn's heart began pounding.

They spent the next four hours reconstructing the company's hidden financial structure.

Project Meridian wasn't merely a record of Carter & Vale.

It was a map.

It showed the shell companies.

The private accounts.

The offshore transfers.

The secret contracts.

And at the center of everything was a company called Vale Strategic Holdings.

Daniel owned it.

But there was something else.

Carter & Vale had secretly purchased a controlling interest in several technology firms.

Daniel had transferred those assets to himself.

He hadn't simply stolen money.

He had been preparing to take the company apart piece by piece.

Then Evelyn saw a transaction dated three days before her suspension.

Her name appeared beside it.

But beneath the authorization was something she recognized immediately.

A handwritten notation.

She had written it herself.

Except she had written it two years earlier.

Someone had copied her signature into the system.

"This is impossible."

Grace leaned closer.

"What?"

"That notation."

"What about it?"

"I remember writing it."

"When?"

"Two years before the transaction."

Grace looked at her.

"Then someone reused an old document."

Evelyn nodded.

"Which means Daniel didn't create everything after I discovered the fraud."

She looked at the files.

"He planned it before I knew anything."

The realization was devastating.

This had never been a reaction to her investigation.

Her investigation had merely interrupted a plan already in motion.

Then Grace's phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

Grace turned the phone toward Evelyn.

A news alert had appeared.

FEDERAL AUTHORITIES ANNOUNCE EXPANDED INVESTIGATION INTO CARTER & VALE.

Evelyn read the article.

Then another notification appeared.

This one was from Daniel.

You should have stayed quiet.

Evelyn stared at the message.

For the first time in three years, she smiled.

Not because she was happy.

Because she finally understood.

Daniel was afraid.

And frightened people made mistakes.

The Man Behind the Curtain

The next morning, Daniel Vale woke to a problem he couldn't buy his way out of.

His assistant entered his office at 6:15.

"Mr. Vale?"

Daniel didn't look up.

"What?"

"The federal investigators have requested records."

"Which records?"

"Everything related to Project Meridian."

Daniel slowly raised his head.

"Who told them about Meridian?"

"We don't know."

Daniel stood.

"Find out."

"We're trying."

"Try harder."

His assistant left.

Daniel walked toward the window.

The city stretched below him.

For years, he had built his empire carefully.

He had never considered himself a criminal.

Criminals were sloppy.

Criminals got caught.

Daniel considered himself an architect.

He had built systems that protected him.

He had placed loyal people in important positions.

He had invested in politicians, charities, businesses, and media companies.

He knew how information moved.

He knew how reputations were manufactured.

He knew that people rarely believed evidence before they believed confidence.

That was why Evelyn had been so easy to destroy.

She had facts.

He had a story.

And stories moved faster.

But now something had changed.

Someone had given the investigators Project Meridian.

Daniel called his private security director.

"Find Evelyn Carter."

"We know where she is."

"Then follow her."

"She has protection."

"From whom?"

"Federal investigators."

Daniel went silent.

Then he said:

"Don't touch her."

The security director paused.

"Understood."

"I want to know where she goes."

Daniel hung up.

He knew Evelyn well enough to understand what she would do next.

She would not run.

She would investigate.

And she would look for the one person who could connect the documents to the actual transactions.

That person was Jonathan Reed.

Carter & Vale's former chief financial officer.

Jonathan had disappeared after Evelyn's suspension.

Everyone assumed he had fled because he was involved.

Daniel knew better.

Jonathan had been one of the few people who understood the entire financial structure.

He was dangerous.

Daniel had spent years making sure Jonathan stayed silent.

Meanwhile, Evelyn and Grace found Jonathan living in a small town several hours outside the city.

He opened the door with a baseball bat in his hands.

"Evelyn?"

She nodded.

"You remember me."

Jonathan stared at her.

"I remember you."

"Then let us in."

He didn't move.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel knows we're looking."

Jonathan's face went pale.

He stepped aside.

Inside, the house was almost empty.

There were no family photographs.

No decorations.

Only books, old computers, and stacks of paper.

Evelyn sat across from him.

"Tell me everything."

Jonathan looked at her.

"I tried to tell you."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

"I never received anything."

"I know."

"What happened?"

Jonathan took a breath.

"Daniel intercepted it."

He explained that shortly before Evelyn discovered the missing payments, he had discovered something worse.

Daniel had created a network of shell companies.

Carter & Vale's contracts were being redirected.

Clients were paying Carter & Vale.

Carter & Vale was paying companies controlled indirectly by Daniel.

Those companies were buying assets.

Eventually, Daniel intended to merge everything into a new corporation.

When the process was complete, Carter & Vale would appear financially unstable.
