"My mother always told me he died because he was doing what he loved."

Her voice became firmer.

"But that's not enough for me anymore."

Jack slowly nodded.

Mia pointed toward the photograph.

"I want to know who he really was."

Nobody laughed.

"I want to know what he was like when he was angry. What he was like when he was afraid. Who his friends were. What he regretted."

She looked around.

"And I want to know why a group of grown men still remembers him twenty years later."

Ralph looked down.

Jack stepped toward Mia.

"You really want the truth?"

"Yes."

"Even if it isn't pretty?"

Mia nodded.

"Especially then."

Jack stared at her for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

"Your father used to say exactly that."

The Story Nobody Told

They gathered around a large wooden table.

For the next two hours, Mia listened.

She heard stories about her father she had never imagined.

Daniel had been reckless when he was young.

He had once ridden through a snowstorm because a friend needed help.

He had lost a motorcycle in a river.

He had broken his arm and refused to leave the hospital until another injured rider was taken care of.

He had also been terrified of snakes.

That revelation finally made Mia laugh.

Jack smiled.

"Yep. Toughest man I've ever known. Completely terrified of snakes."

The room laughed with her.

For the first time that night, Mia felt like she belonged there.

Not because of the patch.

Because of the stories.

Then Jack told her something else.

"Your father had one rule."

"What rule?"

"He believed the strongest person in the room wasn't the one who could hurt somebody."
