Jack looked at the men around the table.
"It was the person who could choose not to."
Mia looked down at her vest.
She finally understood why her father had kept it.
It wasn't a symbol of violence.
It was a reminder.
A reminder of responsibility.
A reminder of loyalty.
A reminder that strength meant protecting people who couldn't protect themselves.
The Patch
Near midnight, Jack stood.
He walked toward Mia.
Then he reached for the back of her vest.
"Turn around."
Mia hesitated.
Then she did.
Jack placed his hand over the embroidered skull.
"The patch doesn't make you one of us."
Mia nodded.
"But neither does being a man."
She turned around.
Jack looked into her eyes.
"Character does."
He took a deep breath.
"Your father carried this patch because he earned it."
He glanced around the room.
"And tonight, you reminded every man here what it was supposed to mean."
Ralph slowly stood.
He walked toward Mia.
For a moment, nobody knew what he was going to do.
Then Ralph extended his hand.
Mia stared at it.
She shook it.
"I'm sorry," Ralph said.
Mia smiled.
"Thank you."
One by one, the other bikers came forward.
Not to test her.
Not to laugh at her.
But to introduce themselves.
Each man told her one story about Daniel.
Each story gave her another piece of the father she had lost.
By the end of the night, Mia knew more about Daniel Carter than she had learned in seventeen years.
Brothers Don't Leave Brothers Behind
Before Mia left, Jack stopped her at the door.
"Your father would be proud."
Mia looked down.
"I hope so."
Jack shook his head.
"He wouldn't just be proud."
