But Arthur wasn't there.

Instead of stepping back to avoid the kicks, which is what 99% of untrained people do, Arthur stepped in. He moved directly inside the arc of the low kick, smothering it before it could generate any power. By the time Julian's high roundhouse swung around, Arthur was already standing intimately close, perfectly balanced, completely unbothered. Julian’s leg wrapped harmlessly around Arthur's upper back like a wet noodle.

A strange silence began to fall over the dojo. The chatting parents quieted down. The instructors narrowed their eyes. Anyone who knew anything about fighting could suddenly see that something was wrong. The geometry of the fight was entirely dictated by the quiet guy in the sweatpants.

Julian stepped back, his face flushing dark red beneath his headgear. His smirk was gone, replaced by a scowl of frustration. This nobody was making him look foolish.

"Stop running away," Julian hissed under his breath.

"I haven't taken a single step backward," Arthur replied, his voice calm, steady, and devoid of any elevated heart rate.

Furious, Julian abandoned the unwritten rules of light exhibition sparring. He rushed forward, throwing a furious flurry of strikes—hooks, uppercuts, spinning backfists. He put real power into them, enough to knock a grown man out cold.

The crowd gasped. Lily clutched her hands together, her eyes wide.

What happened next was less of a fight and more of a synchronized dance where only one person knew the choreography.

Arthur’s movements were profoundly minimalist. He didn't waste a single calorie of energy. He parried a heavy right hook with a simple flick of his wrist, redirecting the momentum so Julian stumbled past him. When Julian spun around and threw a vicious front push-kick, Arthur casually swatted the leg aside with his forearm and lightly tapped the back of Julian’s knee with his foot.

Julian’s leg buckled, and he dropped to one knee.

He scrambled back up, humiliated and raging. The teenage black belt let out a frustrated shout and launched himself at Arthur, abandoning strikes altogether and shooting in for a double-leg takedown. He wanted to use his youth and strength to crush the older man into the mat.

Arthur saw the takedown coming before Julian even fired the muscles in his legs.

As Julian lunged, wrapping his arms around Arthur’s waist, Arthur didn't resist. Instead, he employed the core principle of Judo: Seiryoku Zenyo—maximum efficiency, minimum effort. Arthur sank his weight, grabbed a fistful of the fabric on the back of Julian's gi, placed his foot squarely against Julian’s stomach, and fell backward.
