His three students chuckled dutifully, nodding in eager agreement as Derek demonstrated a sweeping lead hook that transitioned smoothly into a heavy double-leg takedown entry against an imaginary opponent.

Derek reset his stance, wiping a faint bead of sweat from his forehead with the back of his leather kicking pad. As he swung the pad around his hips, his eyes drifted across the floor and landed on Luke, who was currently sweeping behind the squat racks forty feet away.

Derek’s thick lips curled into a faint, condescending smirk. For the past three weeks, Derek had developed a strange, petty irritation toward the old janitor. It wasn't because Luke performed his job poorly; on the contrary, the facility had never been cleaner, the mats never more sterile, the equipment never more meticulously arranged.

What infuriated Derek was Luke’s complete and total silence. Luke didn't stop to watch Derek demonstrate striking combinations. He didn't ask Derek about his former championship fights. When Derek shouted in loud, booming celebration after one of his fighters secured a knockout win, Luke didn't even lift his eyes from his mop bucket.

To a man like Derek, whose entire sense of self-worth was built upon being the loudest, most physical, and most intimidating alpha male in every room he entered, the old janitor’s absolute indifference felt like an unspoken, intolerable insult.

"Hey! Old man!" Derek barked, his voice sharp and aggressive in the quiet gym.

Luke stopped his sweeping motion. He didn't jump. He didn't turn around with a startled twitch. He simply finished the line of his push, rested the wooden handle gently against his right thigh, and slowly turned his head toward the cage.

"Yes, Mr. Vance?" Luke asked softly, his gravelly baritone low and calm.

"You're sweeping those rubber grains the wrong way," Derek said, walking slowly across the mat toward him, flipping the heavy leather kicking pad lazily from his right hand to his left. "You're kicking up microscopic rubber dust right into the HVAC air intake vents. I told you last week, you sweep from the mirror wall out toward the exit, not from the heavy racks into the center."

Luke looked down at the dark rubber floor, then raised his grey eyes to meet Derek’s glare.

"The air intake vents are shut down at nine o'clock, Derek," Luke said mildly. "Sweeping toward the main exit drags the coarse grit directly across the primary seam where the mat tape is already peeling. The rubber grit gets trapped under the adhesive and ruins the foam edge."

Derek stopped dead in his tracks three feet away. His cocky smile vanished instantly.

The three young fighters sitting on the bench stopped their laughing, picking up on the sudden, razor-sharp shift in the atmosphere.

"What did you just say to me?" Derek asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly whisper as he closed the remaining distance, stepping right up to the edge of Luke’s rubber sweeping boundary.

"I said sweeping across the seam damages the tape," Luke repeated, his tone entirely level, completely free of anger, defiance, or fear. "I'm just trying to preserve the lifespan of the mats."

Derek let out a short, mocking laugh, turning his head back toward his three students. "Listen to this guy, boys. The guy with the mop bucket is giving me facility management advice. A guy making fourteen dollars an hour is telling me how to care for my training floor."

Derek stepped fully into Luke’s personal space. He stood six feet two, weighed two hundred and fifteen pounds of dense muscle, and was twenty-seven years younger than the man standing before him. He towered over Luke, projecting every ounce of physical dominance that had carried him through dozens of violent ring encounters.

"Let me clarify something for you, old man," Derek spat, pointing a thick, heavily calloused index finger directly between Luke’s eyes, less than two inches from his nose. "You are hired here to sweep up trash, scrub toilet bowls, and empty grease traps. You do not offer me opinions on mat maintenance. You do not talk back to me. If I tell you to sweep the rubber dust into your own pockets, you do it with a smile and a 'Thank you, coach.' Do you understand me?"
