Derek couldn't answer. He could only make tiny, agonizing rasps in his throat.
"You lost because you train for an audience," Luke explained, his tone strictly instructional, as if he were demonstrating a principle to a classroom of recruit candidates. "You believe strength is about volume. You think confidence comes from wearing heavy chains, shouting in empty rooms, and posturing before men who cannot fight back. But when you encounter genuine violence, your noise does not protect you. Your weight does not save you. Only geometry, balance, and emotional control exist down here."
Luke slowly eased the crushing pressure off Derek’s carotid artery, but he did not dismount. He kept his left knee pinned firmly against Derek’s diaphragm, keeping the breath trapped in the coach's lungs.
Derek gasped wildly, sucking cold air into his lungs in ragged, desperate gulps, coughing violently as oxygen rushed back into his brain.
"Who... who the hell are you?" Derek croaked, his voice raw and destroyed, his trembling hands clutching his neck. "What... what are you?"
Before Luke could respond, the heavy glass entrance doors of the Apex facility clicked open.
A man in a sharp charcoal-grey tailored suit, carrying a heavy leather briefcase, stepped into the lobby. It was Arthur Pendelton—the forty-five-year-old multi-millionaire founder, primary investor, and owner of the entire Apex franchise.
Arthur walked out onto the training floor, unbuttoning his suit jacket. "Derek, I brought those updated liability waivers for the upcoming fall tournament—"
Arthur stopped dead in his tracks.
He looked at the three young fighters standing like statues near the bench. He looked at the broken ash-wood broom handle lying splintered across the black floor.
Then his eyes landed on the center of the mat, where Derek "The Hammer" Vance—his highest-paid celebrity coach—was lying flat on his back, pinned helplessly beneath the knee of the gym's sixty-one-year-old night janitor.
Arthur’s leather briefcase slipped from his fingers, hitting the rubber floor with a heavy THUD.
Arthur Pendelton did not yell. He did not call for facility security.
Instead, every ounce of color drained from his face until his skin matched the white walls of the lobby. He walked across the mat with hurried, rapid steps, stepping right past Derek—who was still coughing on the floor—and stopped two feet from Luke.
Arthur pulled his shoulders back, brought his heels together, and bowed his head in a deep, formal gesture of military respect.
"Colonel Vance," Arthur said, his voice trembling with a level of profound reverence that made the three young fighters' jaws drop even lower. "I... I had no idea you were covering the late floor shift tonight, sir."
Luke looked up at Arthur, released a slow, weary breath, and lifted his knee off Derek’s chest. He stood up smoothly, adjusting the hem of his faded grey sweatshirt, looking once again like nothing more than a tired maintenance worker eager to complete his duties.
"Hello, Arthur," Luke said quietly. "Your head striking coach broke my broom."
Derek sat up slowly, rubbing his red, bruised neck, looking at his boss in total, unadulterated bewilderment.
"Colonel?" Derek wheezed, his voice raspy and broken. "Arthur... what are you talking about? He’s Luke! He’s the janitor! He cleans the grease traps!"
Arthur turned around, staring down at Derek with a look of pure, cold fury that made the large fighter instinctively recoil.
"Shut your mouth, Derek!" Arthur barked, his voice echoing loudly through the rafters. "Shut your mouth right now before I terminate your contract on the spot and ensure you never hold a coaching credential in this city again!"
Arthur turned to the three young fighters who were still holding their phones. "Delete those video files. Immediately. If a single second of footage recorded in this room appears on any social media platform, my legal team will file injunctions that will destroy you financially before the sun comes up."
The three young men frantically tapped their phone screens, permanently purging the video files within seconds.
Derek stood up unsteadily, his large legs shaking beneath him as he tried to regain his balance. "Arthur... please... tell me what is happening here."
Arthur took a deep, steadying breath, adjusting his silk tie, looking at Luke as if silently requesting permission to speak. Luke merely leaned his back against a heavy squat rack, his arms folded loosely across his chest, silent.
