She sniffed it.

Then she scratched.

Emily dropped her brush.

"Daisy, no."

The dog scratched again.

This time she whined.

Emily crouched beside her.

"What do you hear?"

Daisy placed one paw against the wall.

Emily pressed her ear to the plaster.

Silence.

She waited.

Then came a faint vibration.

Emily pulled back.

Something was moving.

She called Mark.

He arrived with a flashlight and a pry bar.

The first layer of plaster came away easily.

Behind it was older plaster.

Behind that was timber.

Mark frowned.

"This isn't standard construction."

He removed another section.

A narrow cavity appeared.

Not large enough for a person.

But large enough for a passage.

Emily's stomach tightened.

"Mark."

"I see it."

The cavity disappeared upward.

They stopped.

That night, Mark called a contractor he trusted.

The contractor arrived the next morning.

After inspecting the wall, he gave them an unexpected answer.

"Your house has been modified."

"How?"

"Someone built an enclosed space between these walls."

"For what?"

The contractor shrugged.

"Could be old electrical work. Could be storage. Could be anything."

Daisy barked from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

She was staring toward the ceiling.

The contractor laughed nervously.

"Your dog doesn't like this place."

Emily didn't laugh.

Neither did Mark.

That evening, they searched local historical records.

The house had belonged to Elias Thorne, a wealthy businessman who had lived there during the early twentieth century.

There were references to renovations.

There were also references to rumors.

Secret rooms.

Hidden corridors.

A concealed stairway.

Emily looked at Mark.

"Do you think they're real?"

"I think old houses have stories."

"And this one?"

Mark closed the file.

"I think we're going to find out."

The following Saturday, Mark removed part of the baseboard.

Behind it was a narrow opening.

Cold air flowed through.

Emily felt goosebumps rise along her arms.

"That's impossible."

Mark crouched down.

"It's definitely a cavity."

He shined his flashlight inside.

The beam disappeared into darkness.

Then Daisy growled.

Not loudly.

Deeply.

Mark stood.

"Maybe we should stop."

Emily nodded.

For the first time, she agreed.

They contacted the police.

Sergeant Miller and Deputy Davis arrived that afternoon.

Miller inspected the opening.

"You've got an old hidden passage."

"Is that dangerous?"

"Potentially."

"Could someone get inside?"

Miller didn't answer immediately.

"Let's find out."

They widened the opening carefully.

Behind the nursery wall was a narrow wooden corridor.

The walls were reinforced with old beams.

Dust covered the floor.

There were footprints.

Fresh ones.

Emily's heart stopped.

"Those aren't ours."

Miller crouched.

He examined the marks.

"You're right."

Mark moved closer.

"How fresh?"

"Hard to say."

Daisy suddenly pushed past them.

Miller caught her collar.

"No."

The dog barked furiously.

She struggled toward the darkness.

Emily had never seen her behave that way.

"Daisy!"

The dog stared into the passage.

Then she began trembling.

Miller's expression changed.

"Everyone outside."
